I already own a AR15, and would like to acquire a FAL.

Any recomendations?  And by the way, how does it compare  (FAL) with a SA SAR8?  I was offered a military version of the SAR8, but I'm sure that the $2800.00 asking price was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much, even being new.

Will appreciate your input!

Thanks.

For a FAL, your best deal right now, without going to a custom builder, would be an IAI M444 (~$750) or a DSA SG58 (~$900).

A SAR-8 is a post-89 ban version of the SAR-3, which is a Greek license version of the HK91 (G3), imported by Springfield Armory. If you want one of these, get one of the guns with the receivers from Portugal (marked INDEP or FMP). They also go in the $750 range. Stay away from the current production SA SAR-8. If you see one you'll see why.  The SA version of the FAL is called the SAR-48, with the post 89-ban version called the SAR-4800. (The US Military tested the FAL produced under the nomenclature T-48)

Go for the FAL, if you shop around you can find a good one for $750 or less. I picked up an StG-58 at a local shop for $625.

For FAL information go read the threads on the FAL Files site:

For SAR8/G3/HK91 info check out:

And don't forget, there's always the current CETME production. There was a long thread here about those at:

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?id=45505

I currently own a couple of FALs and a CETME. I plan on picking up an Indep or FMP G3 next weekend. Frankly, after the current supply of CETME rifles is gone, I don't think we'll ever see them again, and for ~ $450 out the door, they are a good deal and an interesting collector.  I think the G3's will be around a little lonnger, but the same situation applies. BTW, CETME magazines will work in the G3.

I guess if you can afford it, I'd say get the G# and CETME first, presuming that you are interested in them. The FALs will be around for a while, the others won't be with us long. Over 3,000,000 FAL variants were made and it seems like most of them are in the US in the form of parts kits; upper receivers are easily found for ~ $240, parts kits from $125 - $350, assembly by a competent gunsmith ranges from $125-$250.

Ahhh, go check out the links or this will be a 300k message [:)]

... In Arizona, I have had good luck with both Mark Graham of Arizona Response Systems http://www.fnfal.com/falfiles/arizona.html

                ... and

... Derek Huffman of Arizona Expertarms (Flagstaff) http://www.azexarms.com/home.htm

... both guys got some "strong" attitudes but once they realize your not just using them for an "educational source" they become real pussycats (don't tell 'em I said that, our secret - OK?)

My inventory at present includes an HK91 and a DSA STG-58. My .02 worth would be that the 91 type is as fragile as a crowbar and will eat anything you feed it, on the con side the mags  are much more expensive and harder to find, ditto for accessories. I think I paid $175 for the lite bipod.
The FAL has the advantage of cheaper and more plentiful parts and mags. The DSA version is arguably better than the original, it uses a much harder alloy for the receiver. At present you can buy a surplus front end including carry handle, barrel, gas tube and bipod for $99!
I would say that if you can afford it, a good SAR8 would be a slightly better SHTF rifle, but you can buy a lot of extra mags and ammo for the FAL with the same $$$.
Bottom line, as long as you stay away from the cheap aluminum receivers in either model, you can't go wrong.

I have one of the CAI parts guns built on a IMBEL receiver.  I have no complaints.  It is a great rifle for the $400 price tag.

wwww.gunsnammo.com has them on sale in SGN for $395.00 w/free shipping
