I found this in the chukar pen yesterday, still trying to get it out but it seems to like the accomodations and doesn't want to leave:

What kind of hawk/kite/falcon is it?

barred hawk? erm I think thats the name.

Whatever hawk looks like a coopers hawk but is smaller.

Sparrowhawks (american kestrels) have more color.

I doubt it would even go after one since they are about the same size and I'm kind of partial to birds of prey.

Kinda' big for a Sparrow Hawk. I'd take a guess at a Coopers Hawk. It is kinda' beat up a little from the wire.

As of right now it is illegal to kill any bird of prey. Get a casting net and net it up, then release it outside of the enclosure, preferably some distance away. Or better yet, call someone who specializes in birds of prey to get it out of there.

I don't know what it is about raptors, they are just plain impressive, no matter how big or small they are, beautiful birds.

That's because there's still plenty of smaller prey to keep him fed. When he runs out of mice and sparrows he start casting an eye towards the chukars.

You might call your state wildlife office and see if they have any recommendations on getting him removed. I would imagine it's illegal to "trap" or cage the hawk and you sure don't need someone calling them for you.

That is a Sharp Shinned Hawk.
Note the Horizontal Bands on the Tail Feathers. Easy way to identify it.

Looks like a young prairie falcon. I am not sure of their range and don't know where in TX you live, but I see lots of them on my dad's ranch in Coke County north of San Angelo. Especially in wet years when the field mice get out of control. Those times I can go for a walk and see 3-4 cruising around at any given time. They have an awesome evil sounding screech too!

Ok, we got the bird out yesterday and it seemed quite happy to be free, so happy in fact, it was back in the pen a couple of hours later with a fresh kill.

I don't know what to do with it, it's going to keep cutting it's way back in to get at the sparrows, which is all right as long as the chukars don't find the holes. I just don't want it to get stuck in there(lot easier to get in than out apparently).
