AS the cool thing for young people to listen to in order to piss off their parents?

First rock-n-roll, then punk, heavy metal, now rap/hip-hop?

Anything on the horizon?  Self-immolation?

Just one old, un-cool guy wondering aloud.

funeral marches seems to be all the rage, as the rapsters/hopsters gun each other down.

Rap and all of the above are here to stay. The music market has become very segmented due to CD burners, Mp3 players/software, and sattelite radio. There will be no more "one big thing" that young people are listening to.

It's here to stay........for a while.  Just like rock and roll has stayed around.  But as the 'hip-hop' kids have children, those children will look to piss off their rap-loving parents with something really offensive to their parents' sensibilities.  So.........what would that be??

Plus, the digital age seems to speed up trends, not eliminate them.

nothing

What else could allow people to make a living who have no talent and are too lazy to write melodies of their own. All they are doing is TALKING.

Rap is the artform of the ghetto, for those with no intellect or morals or higher brain functions.

pimps and whores, all of them

I have the feeling it'll be around for awhile. I hope Rock, Metal and Punk makes a comback though.

I used to hate rap music but after listening to it everyday while ridding in the work truck ya get used to it.... Hell even some of the older guys (40's) started getting into it when they realized they had to either like it or be miserable.

I still think its for black people though, but thats just me.

I don't think your question even makes sense; there isn't some sort of linear progression.  Sure, even way out in the boonies you'll get a couple wannabe gang bangers, but generally rap/hiphop is a urban thing, and rebelling teenagers elsewhere usually find some other way to 'stick it to the man'.  What I see out in the middle of nowhere more often is stuff like goths and ravers.

Similarly,

Dude, it never left.  Try moving someplace with a smaller population of rap-music-listening numbnuts.

IMHO, I'll agree with the next big thing being anything...

Music taste has become segmented by whatever little 'group' you are with...

Rap/hip-hop/R&B have their following

Rock & Metal theirs

Country has it's own...

Most of these groups don't interact too much, but if you're a rock person stuck with a bunch of rap punks, then you suffer... Or vice versa....

Now if we're talking 'dance music', I don't deal with that, so I have no idea what is or isn't good dance/club music - I never go...

Personally, I've never really moved off rock - good music for driving too fast.... Since that's the only time I listen to it...

will be Iranian, Russian, or Chinese in origin
it will most likely have an average of 87 beats per  minute

I fear that the "Music Mafia" is just the tip of the iceberg to come, and our radios are all labled S.S. Titanic...
