Strong Quakes Kill at Least 38 in Iran

By ALI AKBAR DAREINI
Associated Press Writer

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Two strong earthquakes flattened villages in western Iran early Friday, killing at least 38 and injuring hundreds, state media reported.

At least 10 tremors rocked the mountainous region throughout the night, state television reported, saying the first one had a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 and struck around 1 a.m. local time.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 5.7 magnitude quake shortly before 5 a.m. local time., followed by a 4.7 magnitude aftershock about 15 minutes later.

The quakes were centered near Boroujerd and Doroud, two industrial cities about 210 miles southwest of Tehran, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

Provincial official Ali Barani said the quake flattened several villages.

State television said 38 bodies had been pulled out of destroyed houses in Silakhor, a region north of Doroud.

The broadcast said more than 700 people were injured, most of whom were in bed at the time.

The quake damaged buildings and toppled telephone lines in Doroud, IRNA quoted officials there as saying.

People in Doroud ran into the streets in panic when the first quake hit shortly after midnight. Many spent the remainder of the night outside.

"We are afraid to get back home. I spent the night with my family and guests in open space last night," Doroud resident Mahmoud Chaharmiri told The Associated Press by telephone.

But Chaharmiri said there were no scenes of destruction in Doroud such as those after similar sized quakes in Iran.

In February 2005, a 6.4-magnitude quake in southern Iran killed 612 people and injured more than 1,400.

A magnitude 6.6 quake flattened the historic southeastern city of Bam in the same region in December 2003, killing 26,000 people.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. On average, it experiences at least one slight earthquake every day.

5.7 is not that big at all.  Yet it actually kills people in the third world.

You guys dont seem to be aware how pro-American the typical Iraniancitizen is.  They know the mullahs are liars and corrupt as hell.  They compare what their leaders say about us with what they see with their own eyes on satellite tv and what their relatives living in LA say, and realize who the good guys are.

So dont cheer when average Persians perish in earthquakes.

I'm really serious.  The Iranian population in general is very pro-American.  It's hard to believe but it's true.

This is why we can't win wars anymore....If we had this attitude in WWII, we would've lost.

We were at war with Germany. We didn't worry which Germans were on their side and which ones weren't. We hammered them until they lost the will to fight.

If it goes down with Iran, that is the way to win. To worry about which ones are "good guys" and which ones aren't guarantee defeat. There is no winning of hearts and minds. That is a bullshit war plan put forward by dipshits. There is only destroying hearts and minds until the will to fight is completely stamped out.

This is why we are not gaining decisive victory in Iraq. Insurgents dropping mortars on your postion feom a neighborhood? Flatten the neighborhood. When people are more scared of being carpet bombed for letting insurgents work from their nighborhood, that they are of the insurgents, or their devotion to allah, they will stop letting inurgents operate.

That was 26-27 years ago.  The Persians got to find out how life was under an Islamic theocracy.  Surprise, it sucks.  And they're tired of it.

The sad thing is, Egypt's very similar.  Egypt was very liberal and modern 100 years ago.  Since then, their politics have been pushing for an Islamic theocracy like Iran's.  Bin Laden's XO lead that fight for many years in the 70's.  The Egyptians seem hellbent on following Iran's lead, even though the average Iranian doesn't want it any longer.
