in Troy Oh anyway....I had to rescue a Savage bolt gun from the clutches of the sporting goods clerk today. I was picking up some cleaning supplies, and watched in horror as this monkey was trying to remove the bolt from the rifle.......with a hammer!!!!! I don't know why he was trying to get the bolt out of the weapon....but he didn't have a clue. Frankly I had never messed with Savage bolt actions, and was just going to mind my business.....till he asked for a hammer!!!!

As far as I remember, you need only clear the weapon, and pull the bolt to th rear.  Pull the trigger back and the bolt slides out.  Same procedure for replacing said bolt.

I am pretty sure there is a bolt release that you depress to remove the bolt on a savage. It is located just in front of the bolt handle.  Luckily my local Walmart has a guy with a  Legit Class III ffL and alot of knowledge and love of firearms.... however he is a cockly arrogant SOB.

I had a very similar experience at the Wal-Mart. I wanted to look at a Savage 110 from their case. The guy behind the counter pulls the rifle out and tries to open the action (I was impressed that he wanted to check the chamber) but the bolt would not open. He pulled and pulled, yanked and yanked but no luck. He then picked up a stapler and started to pound the bolt handle (at least he was using the rubber pad on the bottom of the stapler as the hammer). Like watching someone toture a cat I finally told him to stop. I then remembered that Savage guns have the tang safety which fully reward locks the bolt. I told the guy to check the safety and told him to push it forward. He did, and the bolt opened. Funny thing is he forgot to actually CHECK the chamber and magazine and just handed the gun to me. After a minute, I handed the rifle back and asked him if they had another one in the back that was still in the box. He started to check the books but finally said "I think this is the last one, do you want it" I wanted to say; does the combo stapler/bolt opener come with it but I didn't. I just told him that "I have had bad luck buying display models". He just looked at me with a "why would you have a problem" look.

If WM has a type of firearm I am looking for, then I will buy it there. They normally don't carry what I want. Although the weatherby 30-06 for $160 was a nice buy. The charles daly 20 for $25 wasn't bad either, winchester mod 70 in 270 with detachable mag for $125, mossberg 835 camo for $150......... yes please, don't buy firearms from walmart.

Our local Wal-mart announces over the PA that a manager is needed for a firearm transaction, and then another announcement that you are leaving the store with a firearm. Then they escort you to the door carrying your gun.  Want ammo?  They question you on what it's for.

This isn't babbling, this is fact at our local store. I assumed this is company policy, but maybe it isn't.  If you local dealer is an asshole, then by all means, go somewhere else.  Personally, I'll always try to support the little guy (if his prices are reasonable - and my local dealers are) instead of a business that makes most of their money off of cheap labor in a communist country.

I love that ignorant "China-mart" label.

Guess what, their percentage of goods made in China is no higher than any other big chain.  That, plus some people have nowhere else to buy firearms.  Some towns don't have dealers.

Sounds like better than 10% doesn't it?  Admittedly, not as high as I thought, but still awfully high.  China is a country that imprisons people for practicing their personal religious beliefs and speaking out about the government.  They also torture innocent people at will.

In the latest issue of The New American magazine, they highlight a woman in China that was brutally tortuted for over seven hours by electric shock to her face before finally dying - there are some graphic pics in the magazine of the woman. Her face was all torn up. She had committed no crime.  This is the country you are doing business with everytime you buy something made in China, be it at Wal-Mart, Target or other.

ONLY 19 Billion you say?  Sounds like 19 billion too much to me.  We beat the Russians in the cold war because they couldn't compete economically.  How do you expect to topple the communist chinese government when we are in essence backing them economically?  The Chinese government's military expenditures as part of their budget is in the double digits. China's army is in the millions of soldiers. They steal our military technology. Who do you think they are gearing up to fight?  Where do you think the money for this miltary spending is coming from?

Communism and capitalism are merging.  This should scare the hell out of you.  Big business has bought the politicians, so they can make a buck in communist countries like China and Vietnam.  And the evil empires grow...  Mark my words - we WILL fight them again sooner or later, be it over oil or other.  Thats your son and mine.  So go save a few bucks, and help to prop up the commies a little more.

I think a lot of wal-marts ask you what the ammo is for because according to the ATF regs the age limit for selling handgun ammo is higher than for selling rifle ammo.  They are covering their ass.  They aren't asking what you are going to shoot with it, only the type of firearm the ammo is going to be used in... I always reply rifle...

As far as the carrying the gun out of the store I always find it humorous since I've been carrying my CCW on a couple occasions when I bought a gun at wally world!  lol  It's their policy... does it really matter?  At least now they make managers check the sales so they don't endanger their FFL"s with stupid mistakes by untrained employees.

I value Wal-Mart's gun departments.  I figure the more FFL's there are out there the better off we all are.  Why not support them and give them incentive to stay in the gun business?  Would you rather they stopped selling them and began contributing to the brady center?

I have bought several guns at wal-mart.  No lemons yet.  If I need a cheap functional .22 or shotty, they are often my first stop.

Finally for the poster who mentioned the percentage of chinese suppliers vs. US supplier who wal-mart buys from...  What percentage of the "US suppliers'" products are actually produced domestically?  Levi Strauss is a US company, but how many articles of clothing are made here by them?  According to a recent article I read that percentage would be ZERO...

Not trying to flame you, but I feel you are omitting certain facts in your defense against the China-mart label...

Just my $.02...

This is a good argument, but consider the flip side:  Smaller gun shops that are geographically close steadily lose business to Wal-mart as they cannot compete with Wally-Worlds high volume buying and pricing.  They eventually close their doors as they cannot compete with the low prices, and still remain open.  Now you have only Wal-mart selling guns (and maybe a few others).  What happens if Wal-Mart decides to pull a K-Mart and go PC on us - no longer selling ANY firearms.  Now you are in a pickle as the little guys were run off and Wally World pulled up the anchor.

Before you say that couldn't happen, remember we live in uncertain times and all it would take is the wrong kind of tragedy somewhere and big business will settle on the side of least political resistance or bad publicity.

Far-fetched and unlikely, but it could happen in some areas.  I agree, the more FFLs around, the better, but I think that Wal-Mart will eventually cost us dealers in the long run.

To be honest I don't see Walmart as a big threat to FFL dealers....they really don't carry much as far as "non hunting guns" and the they don't carry any handguns at all. The regular dealers may get beat up alittle on the price of a plain jane Remington 870 or Savage 110. But in the long run the FLL dealer will have the "gun nut" market pretty much covered.

in Troy Oh anyway....I had to rescue a Savage bolt gun from the clutches of the sporting goods clerk today.

I value Wal-Mart's gun departments.  I figure the more FFL's there are out there the better off we all are.  Why not support them and give them incentive to stay in the gun business?  Would you rather they stopped selling them and began contributing to the brady center?

B.S. First off, Wal-Mart will never put gun dealers out of business - they don't have the selection. No handguns whatsoever (except for Alaska), and only the cheapest, simplest hunting rifles. Only the stereotypical Elmer Fudd would be satisfied with Wal-Mart's selection. Hell, even they might not - no fancy $4k engraved shotguns. Where's the military surplus? High-cap semi-autos? Long-range target rifles? High-powered stuff? Then, there's ammo and accessories. Wal-Mart has a few boxes of the cheapest ammo around, no good hollowpoints or serious defensive ammo, and usually not very much of what they do have. No magazines for anything, or parts. A couple of cheap scopes, and generic slings, and that's about it. You'd have to be running the crappiest gunstore in the country for Wal-Mart to put you out of business. Hell, my closet probably has a better selection then Wal-Mart.

If Wal-Mart somehow became a decent gun store and ran all the other gun stores out of business, and then decided to pull it all then... (might want to pause, radical concept here) The gun dealers will come back! As long as there's a demand, someone will be around to fill it. There's millions of people who want to buy guns, and thousands of people employed making firearms and ammo for all of them. They're not going to pack up and go home because Wal-Mart pulled some silly trick.
