What motor does it have?  I now that the 3.1 v6 has head gasket problems.  My wifes 95 3.1 GP had the head gaskets go out at 130,000.  The mechanic said this was SOP on the 3.1 at about that many miles.

The Odometer can't be right!

There's no fucking way a pontiac will last for 150,000 miles!!!
Pontiac is the only car people roll the odometer forward on to feel good!

Pass on that hunk of shit quick, Bra!

Usually it's the "intake gaskets" on the 3.1l's....not the head gasket.

And the 3.8l is like the 3rd bulletproof engine from GM....save the 350/262.
The weak link on the L67 engine/drivetrain is the 4l60eHD tranny.  Just make sure it's good to go and you're golden.
I would kill to pick one up for $2k.

Supercharged = Head Gasket problemos

Have a good mechanic check it out before you make a $2k mistake...just my humble .02, nothing more...

ETA This would be a private sale and I always take cars to a well known shop for inspection before purchasing.

How did you manage that without editing your post?

Anyhow, I'd go for it. The price is right, it's already made it 150,000, and the odds of getting nickled and  dimed to death inside of 5,000 miles are pretty low. I'd buy it. That's a hell of a deal.

Pontiacs  -- hell, GMs -- over 5 years old and with that kind of mileage are nickel and dime bombs looking for a place to explode.

As a backup car that will be driven very occasionally it would probably be worth rolling the dice.  There is no way I'd ever consider it as a daily driver, though.

That doesn't sound like a bad deal.  The 3.8 is a very reliable, long lasting motor.  I have owned many cars with the 3.8 and they have been great.  My current one is pushing 200,000 with nothing but standard maint and my old one was over 238,000 when I sold it.  I also know many of the mailmen around here drive cars with the 3.1/3.8 due to how well they last in that environment.

The main thing to check would be the tranny, it the car has been modded that is the weak link.  Check out www.clubgp.com for more info.  Many of the guys there have a lot of miles on their cars with very few problems.

I do get a kick out of the sheeple that have commented on this thread.  A simple check of JD Power would show that the 3.8 and/or Grand Prix is a good car.  I question how many of the negative posters have ever owned much less rode in one.  To bad objectivity and thinking for one's self is not very popular.

When JD Power is paying my car note, I'll listen.

Until then I will take my experiences (with three GM cars) and that of my friends and family to heart.

Trade in $1,934
Private party $3,260
Dealer retail $4,779

That's what Edmunds says the car is worth.

2K doesn't sound like a bad deal.

I don't get this. Here we have a car that has been on the road for 150,000 miles, yet some folks still insist it isn't a good car. You guys are hard to please.

I had a 2000 Grand Prix that I traded for a new one last year.
169,000mi.
Ran great but the tranny was starting to screw up and I had that rebulit at 112,000.
Fuel pump had gone and it had some front end work.

Engine ran like new.

Focus on the front end is my advice. Nice cars IMO. I love driving mine. Both.

I posted in the Cars section but here goes:
I've heard nothing about problems in the Grand Prix.  Yes, definitely do an inspection.  For 2 G's you've got a good deal and as long as you take care of it it would make a good second car.  The mileage doesn't scare me in the least because so long as it's maintained well(and it seems it has been) it shouldn't be a problem.

Past history is no indicator of future performance.

Who knows how many repairs it's already had?   Who knows what minor annoying things are getting ready to fail?  At 150k many GMs are beginning to fall apart.

How long have you been here?

You should know by now that any GM/Ford/DCX vehicle will get bashed on this site.

I have a 2000 Grand Prix with 154,000 miles on it.  I got it a little over 4 years ago with only 8,000 miles on it.  I cover most of the state of NY doing field service so it gets lot of miles on it.  It has the 3.1 Litre engine in it too.  I have put about $3,000 of repairs into it but most of it for routine wear and tear.

Last year I hit a deer on I90 while going about 65 mph.  Total damage was $135 for a new fog light.   I didn't even have to stop to check for damage.  Later that year while waiting for a light I got tapped in the rear by a Japanese car of some sort.  My car just giggled.   Her car had it front plastic loosened up and pushed aroud a bit.

It has been my best automobile I have ever owned.  I drive it about 3,000 miles per month and just keep changing the oil every 3,500 miles or so.   Longest one day drive was 1078 miles from Rochester, NY to Ft. Benning Georgia.  It still gets about 30 mpg and it always starts when I ask it too and goes where I want it too.  It also handles very nicely in the snow.

I have a 97 GTP with 100,000 miles. Had a few problems which were fixed by the dealer. There is a plastic part for the cooling system that broke spraying the engine with water. Looked like a head cracked. Dealer stripped the top end to make sure nothing was wrapped. That was at 60,000 miles.

The SC 3.8 is a killer motor. The car has done 120 many times. Seems to me that the SC motor has got be worth a few bucks by itself.

If its a 3800/3.8L, buy it now.....I had an Olds that had 253,000ish and the only reason I quit driving it was because it was pretty rusty underneith.  Best car I've ever owned.

I'm hestitant on anything GM over 150K. Sounds like your going to do a lot of parts replacing.
That's been my experience with high mileage GM cars.
ETA: I don't know why but every GM car I ever owned went thru alternators.

After our 94' practically fell apart at 115,00 I will NEVER own another pontiac. We did ALL the scheduled maintenance at the dealer , and it still ate a starter and alternator every year. Of course the dealer couldn't find a single problem why it was doing it.

Unfortunately people that buy GM can't get away from the failings of a single model.  That is same model can is re-badged as a Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldmobile etc with all of its shortcomings.  I had a Oldsmobile Cutlas Cruiser fail at 150,000 motor siezed and trans slips, and personally won't buy another GM car.

Today's USA-Big3 cars are basically throw-aways when you have problems after 100,000 miles.

I've always wanted a super-charged 3.8 (like a Park Ave).  My LeSabre is 12 years old, almost 100k miles, and totally trouble free.
