I'd suggest looking at Mya brand hookas. I've a got a glass one from them and I really like it. They do make acrylic bases which you can get a complete set up for <$50, but IMO it is not worth it. Go glass, you wont regret it. As far a m'assal, I'd recomend Tangiers, as they are hand made here in America, and his stuff is really high quality. The crap you get at the smoke shop for $3 a box is ok, but you will instantly tell a difference in quality from true premium stuff. Flavors, I'd reccomend double apple, rasberry + coconut, rose (mmmmm), and honey.
You said youre new to hookas, so heres a few tips for a GREAT smoke. Sprinkle the m'assal in the bowl, dont pack it. This keeps the smoke nice and light, but it will not get thin. Remember to get the gap right between your m'assal and your coal. Too close, you will burn the tobacco and it will taste like ish, not to mention its a bitch to get the taste/smell out of your set up. Too far and your will not get the tobacco to burn enough, and it will be a weak smoke. Remember to move your coal around as you smoke, this will keep one spot from getting burnt out and dying. I personally like to put up a guard of foil around the coal. Wrap the bowl in foil about 4 inches high to make a sort of chimney. DO NOT close it, leave it open about the size of the bowl. This allows the coal to burn a little hotter, because often one open coal is not enough, but two is too much. Water, the colder the better. You generally want your stem to go 3/4" to 1" into the water, for optimal filtering. Just remember, the more water you have, the less smoke you will get, and the less harsh it will be. I generally put cold water in mine, with 4-5 ice cubes. Make sure to keep your m'assal moist, always keep it in its airtight container, do not leave it out. You generally want to store it at the same humidity and temperature as you will be smoking it. I think that about covers it. There's a couple other tricks out there, but this is my basic guideline for a good smoke. If you've got anymore questions let me know, I kinda like to consider myself a bit of a hooka afficianado.
