he DOES NOT do the best songs from his new album, guess they're holding those for those who buy the album.

why is this guy popular?

IMHO, its a faign attempt at reggae. Poor beats, and non-intelligence lyrics.

hehehe - his last scrappy live album went gold.

the new one is polished and beautiful  I guarantee platinum.

The thing is that each group that likes him likes him for the opposite of the reasons you mentioned.

Reggae-folk like it cause he's not faking anything.  He's singing from his soul.  IF you didn't call it 'reggae' it would still be awesome reggae.
Music lovers like it cause the beats are actually damn good, and it happens to be a wixked mix of musics - I try and define him somehwere along the lines of Ben Harper meets Rusted Root meets a really cool rabbi.
And people like me like it cause as an orthodox jew his words and themes touch me where no other music can.

Meh.  2 decent songs on the whole album. He's a flash in the pan.  He probably will go platnum, but thats just because he's riding MTV's dick.

I do not watch MTV and have never seen his videos. But I have seen him in concert twice and met him after the show.  He is making music fron his heart, not riding MTV's dick, and his fans can see that. He will be around for a while.

Not bad for what it is, but a white guy with no accent puts on a Jamaican accent when he sings? Seems like a gimmick to me.

Time will tell if he is just a one shot wonder and novelty, or whether he has any depth.

Sometimes it takes an outsider to a genre to bring it something fresh.

As far as the accent thing goes it not uncommon.  Look at all the british rock and rollers who sing with American accents.

The beasties were able to overlap their modern NY jewish boy culture with rap succesfully.

this is his third album.  First one was a college hit and got the frat crowd.  Second one was live version of first one and went Gold.  novelty?

folks, MTV is the one who jumped on teh bandwagon, he didn't jump on theirs.

The only thing I can say abou thte accent is that a) it works b) it sounds good c) it goes with the music.

You remember the blondie rap song.  IT sucked cause she didn't do it in a 'rap' voice.

[MC Shan:]

Me sittin round cool with my jiggy jiggy girl

Rough me up and I cant do a thing
Pick up my line when my telephone ring
Take me to the station, black up my hands
Trail me down 'cause I'm hangin with the Snowman
What an I gonna do, I'm backed and I'm trapped
Smack me in my face, took all of my gap
They have no clues and they wanna get warmer
But Shan won't turn informer
