SANVODEM, India -- Hundreds of Hindu protesters rampaged through a town in the coastal state of Goa on Saturday, storming a police station, beating officers, looting Muslim shops and burning vehicles and buildings.

Five people, including three police officers, were wounded as officers with batons tried to repel rioters. The protesters were demanding the release of 37 men arrested during three days of violent Hindu-Muslim clashes sparked when suspected Hindu extremists destroyed a mosque in Sanvodem.

The protesters beat officers and bombarded them with rocks, said police superintendent Satkhar Prabhubesai.

Several men could be seen stealing a policeman's gun after beating him unconscious with stones and sticks.

An overturned car lay in a pile of debris in front of the police station.

The protesters left the police station Saturday after Hindu politicians intervened to secure the release of the 37 men.

Relations between India's Hindus and minority Muslims are uneasy and often flare into violence: On Friday a Muslim protest in the northern city of Lucknow against a visit by President Bush turned into a Muslim-Hindu riot in which four people were shot dead.

But religious clashes in Goa, a former Portuguese colony and one of India's premier tourist attractions, are rare.

Well, if you read the news around Valentine's Day, you'll find plenty of stories of Hindus trashing shops that dare to sell those horribly evil cards that relate to un-Hindu religion and immoral behavior. . . .  Oh yeah, that's unpossible, right?  That's only the Saudis, isn't it??



I dunno.  I've worked with quite a few Indians in the software world.  The vast majority were thoroughly socialist and gun-hating;  in fact, I can't think of any Hindu Indians who weren't.  The Sikhs were really great, though, as were the Muslims (well, ok, they were Pakistani).

Muslims and Hindus have been killing each other in India since the Brittish pulled out.

It is nothing new.

Some of the more extreme Hindu groups in India are every bit as bad as the extreme muslim terrorist groups.

People fail to understand something about that region. They don't have a society like ours. In our society, our national government is strong and its influence can be seen everywhere. Things are really very much the same no matter where you go in the US.

In places like India they have extremes. The poorest of the poor, the richest of the rich. Places where the national government is strong, and places where the national government has hardly any influence. Places that are the highest of high tech, and places that haven't seen real progress in hundreds of years.

Extremist hindus have been doing things like persecuting Christian missionaries and Christian churches for years. Religious violence is nothing new, but the most egregious violence has been almost exclusively the doing of the muslim side of things. The hindus have usually responded with an eye for an eye...
