In '95 the city goverment of Salvador, Bahia - Brazil did random sampling of meat sold throughout the city by roadside vendors. (think BBQ meat sticks) 1 in 3 tested was feline. I ate BBQ cat once and didn't find the taste objectionable at all. There is a district of Ilheus (also in Bahia)surrounded by mangrove swamps populated by hundreds of thousands (or millions) of tree climbing, hole digging, everything eating blue crabs called Gaiamun. The power goes out everyday at (or at least it did) about 6pm because of illegal connections to powerlines overloading the substations. (everyone had their TV on watching "Novelas") There used to be a sizable cat population in that area. They became a local staple along with the crabs. Lots of people would have starved without the cats and crabs.
FWIW it is not uncommon for people in areas close to the jungle kill and eat wild cats and small jungle cats.
