My good friend returned home from I raq after serving about a year. His unit is suffering on retention. He is in the National Guard. I will not disclose in what state. Anyway, his enlistment was expiring and the Top(1st seargant) and the retention NCO were trying to get him to re enlist  for about 3-4 months before his ETS. Anyway , my friend tells the Top that he will re enlist under some stipulations

1) He gets his Bonus $10k

2) He can have 30/ 30 round mags

3) 4 cases of MRE's

No bullshit, the top came through with the deal. Funny thing is that my friend had all the intentions of re enlisting anyway.

Wow, they must be desperate. I wonder what kind of deal someone could work out for a four year active duty enlistment...

" *Cough*...that's a nice lookin' M249 you got there.....*cough* "

For real I wish I had that bargaining power when my ETA came around

Yes, if you can get the ATF to approve this Form 5 transfer to me of this M249 which of course was mfrd in the US by FN in 1985, I'll re-up.

Its 15K

2) He can have 30/ 30 round mags

The unit can write off 10 % of its mags annually  as expendable anyways, but what an incentive

3) 4 cases of MRE's

Every good Supply guy has a few cases stashed away above and beyond their required go to war stocks.

Lucky him. Call me when they give an M16 as a reenlistment bonus instead of that cheesy pin, pen or backpack.

On Fox this morning they were talking about offering some special forces re-ups upwards of $150,000 for another tour.

The SF thing is true. The senior guys are getting it to extend beyond RCP. Couple of the guys in my unit got em, got em tax free too. I only got $30k, but I'm not complaining.

My buddy was talking about his re-enlistment coming up over there, and he's just gonna go ape shit on what he wants.

He figures it can't hurt to ask.

If he's in the CT Guard he's earned it.  The deployment schedules of some of those CT units has been insane.

Shit, if I was SF or something along those lines I'd pay THEM to let me stay....

Wow. That's pretty cool. 30 mags?

30 x $15 = $450

Not alot of money (compared to the bonus), but it's 30 less mags he has to buy.

I would have asked for the same, PLUS an ACOG of my choice (they are cheap to the .gov, right?), a set of gear and body armor... oh and night vision goggles and my own MK23 suppressed/indexed (tax free) w/ LAM, etc.

Except those are sensitive or property book  items, where the MREs, the mags, etc are not.

Its all about negotiation. They can make it happen, and not even use their own inventory.

Where are you going to find night vision, body armor, etc, that isn't on SOMEONES property book?

Recruiting is funny.

After we recieved our Activation Alert for Iraq, we had 3 prior service guys, one of which was part of OIF I, show up and would only enlist if they were guaranteed to go to Iraq. All the free mags and ammo they could use for a year. One guy got a bonus of 2 extra bullets, but he did have to trade in about 2 inches of his right tibia in the process but he is doing well and will return to us in about 8 months.

I always joked with my friends that I would would reenlist under 2 conditions:

1) Ten million dollar bonus
2) An autographed picture of god

Now in a few months I'll be doing it for a little less. After deploying all I want is to stay in, it's funny how things change.
