Well - for some reason - We Were Soilders really effected me. I dont know why. But I really get all choked up in the end.
If you have the DVD, watch the deleted scenes. There is one where some of the troops are trap shooting and recounting a story about Sam Elliots Character, Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley. Two words about this man. BAD ASS. Now - if I actually think back and think about it, I would have to say Full Metal Jacket - mainly for R. Lee Ermey. (He signed my DVD!!) From there I have to say Saving Pvt Ryan and Black Hawk Down. As for an artsy film - Apocalypse now. I also LOVE Band of Brothers. Its not a movie - its more of an odyssy. I still need it on DVD - but its truely great. |

Damn.....why aren't there more GREAT war films? Some of my favorites.
Saving Private Ryan is my favorite. ========================= First war film that really left me in shock after seeing it....which is how it should be out of total respect to those who paid with their blood. Set the new standard for war films. Band Of Brothers ============ Best mini-series ever. Great combat and an incredible DVD set. I'll somewhat forgive them for fucking up Bastogne ....which is still a GREAT story that needs to be told on film in whole. Platoon ====== Vietnam was a cluster fuck. One of the few good films by Oliver Stone. Enemy At The Gates =============== It's a very good film....but not great. Nice to get a peek into the Russian theatre during WW2. Tae Guk GI ========= The "Saving Private Ryan" of the Korean War. Absolutely brutal combat that pulls no punches. Some scenes are far fetched...but still very impressive for a foreign flick. A MUST see. |

Some of those mentioned I haven't seen. This past Sunday night I watched Platoon again after a few years, and I recently bought a copy of The Great Escape, but haven't watched it yet. I don't remember the last time I saw it. I'd love to have Band of Brothers, and if it counts as a single movie for this thread, I'd say this is my favorite. I haven't seen it in a few years, and look forward to seeing it again. The book is good too. If you like the Boot Camp stuff in Full Metal Jacket, check out Jack Webb's 1957 film The DI. I plan to get a copy of Saving Private Ryan. I love WWII movies. As a grade school boy, WWII was the war I fought with friends, and I saw a lot of those movies as a kid. I plan to review all of them eventually. For Vietnam movies, I'm not a fan of Apocalypse Now, partly because I think it gets stupid at the end, and I hate Marlon Brando's performance in it. I much prefer Platoon. I have a lot of catching up to do on war movies, though.
