Since it's 15 degrees here right now, I thought pea soup would make a nice dinner.

Raw materials:

(I would normally use a ham bone, but I didn't feel like eating a whole ham for breakfast...today)

All chopped up:

(That's a Wusthof Classic for those you keeping score at home)

In the crock pot...

see you in a few hours

Good looking soup there. Crockpot cooking is great, stews, chili, soups, etc. I've got an old Rival Stoneware crockpot with the thick removable ceramic insert. I got it at a yardsale for $3. It was even made in the USA, if you can believe that

Questions:

1.  How much water?  Just enough to cover the ingredients?
2.  High heat vs. low heat?
3.  How long in the crock pot?

Looks good...

It was about 1.25 qt of water.....but basically enough to almost cover the ingredients

High heat for the first hour, then low heat

You can leave it in the pot forever, but about 8 hrs on low

It's all going to go in the blender when the cooking is done, so as long as everything is soft it's done.

Get yourself a handheld blender.  Makes blending soups in the pot so easy.

ETA:  oh yeah, and the soup looks tasty.  I made chicken soup last night.  Must be the cold weather bringing out the soup-makers.  Blessed are the soup-makers.

Use 1/2 chicken (or vegetable) stock, 1/2 water. It will have even better flavor.

Try adding some Basil...I think you will like it. Only takes 1/2 to 1 teaspoon, but adds a sweet flavor that is hard to beat.
