Original thread here

That is a recent thread about Lafayette county Arkansas Deputy Stacy McMurrough.  He was killed last weekend and laid to rest yesterday morning.  He was not wearing his seatbelt and lost control of his car and was ejected from it.  South Arkansas is where this happened and it's mostly small rural counties and even 50 or 60 miles away, most of the emergency responders know each other.  Now finding a small miracle in his death, he had no wife or kids.  I wish that his death had the effect of making other local emergency responders wearing their seatbelts.  Had they done so, 2 fordyce EMTs would still be alive that were killed last night, while responding to a call.  One of these men did have a wife and child(ren).  Details haven't come in yet but will be posted as soon as I get them.
Link to story of the 2 EMTs

This was Tim and Kents rig.  Apparently, where your seatbelts and don't drive so fast.

Damn....that's sad.

Wow. That's like a heart & lung specialist smoking cigarettes.

I always put my seatbelt on. It just feels weird not wearing one.I have only not worn it once and that was because it was a company vehicle that was being driven as a daily driver by one of our managers. I went to take it for an oil change and the damn seatbelt didn't work. I let him know and he said he was aware of it (he just hadn't asked to have it fixed). It got fixed the next time we took it to the dealership.

To make this even worse, it's looking like at least one of the two EMT's killed attended the Funeral that morning.  I know his bosses did.

I read an article about a Dallas EMT's experiences in Reader's Digest, right after MA made the seatbelt law that I was adamant about defying.

The article quoted the guy as saying that of the 2500 accidents he'd attended, he never once unbuckled a corpse.

Well, my days of civil disobedience were very over, to say the least.

Water into wine? OK. Move a mountain with a gesture? OK. Raise a dead man? OK

Couldn't find a girl and settle down? You guys need to asess what makes a miracle.

Also, cops don't unbuckle corpses because cops don't unbuckle anyone, dead or alive, unless there is eminent danger and the strapped in individual needs assistance, ie, unconscious and the vehicle is on fire.

I know you guys hate freedom, and that is OK. Every liberal does. But don't call the guy's unmarried status a miracle, and please don't praise anti freedom BS on a board ostensibly devoted to civil liberties.

Freedom means a lack of government interference. The government has no right to tell me what to do with regards to safety equipment. Freedom also means the ability to be just as stupid as you want to be.  A law mandated by insurance companies designed solely to increase their bottom line and to allow for further extrotion at the hands of government agents is not a good law.

The guy died, and that sucks, but it was his choice, and the choice is what matters.

Am I the fucking government?  Is my name Dubya? No it's not.  I'm an EMT and FF that has worked thousands of wrecks and Yesterday morning was supposed to have gone to a funeral of a Deputy killed by not wearing his.  2 EMTs did go and 12 hours later they were dead because they didn't wear their seatbelts.  No one here has advocated the forced wearing of seatbelts.  So get your political bullshit out of this thread.  That's not what it's about.

I Believe I said that an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) was quted in the article, not a cop.
As far as the law...I believe that my post clearly shows I did not do it because of the law, I did it because someone (that EMT) compelled me to because of his experience.

Yesterday we just had a big storm here in Utah with very low temps. Snow hit the roads and stayed. We had nearly 500 car wrecks in three counties.

The only fatality was a 4 year old in a pickup involved in a single car accident. The mother was driving and his brother was in the car. No one was wearing a seatbelt and there were no child safety seats in the car.

I stongly believe society shouldn't be involved in protecting people from themselves, but what choice did this boy have?

I *DESPISE* the "click it or ticket" horseshit being shoved down our throats (Oh, we'll *never* use seatbelts as a primary offense), it reeks as just another income source and a way for gooberment to micromanage its subjects.

Having said that I wholeheartedly agree with fact that seat belts and car seats for kids save lives.  There's enough hard, scientific evidence out there to PROVE it many times over.

If you're so Goddamned stupid that you, as an a adult, chose to blatantly risk your life in order to make some statement about "freedom", be my guest.  Darwin has a way of weeding those types out the gene pool.

However kids are another matter since they don't have the knowledge to make those kinds of choices about their lives.  I think anyone caught with unsecured kids in the car is guilty of endangerment.  Period.

If we the taxpayers are lucky

I have no problem with people not wearing seatbelts, motorcycle helmets, etc.  But if you turn yourself into a veggie, you should have to sign a waiver stating that we can let you die because you refused to use the safety equipment and not be a drain on taxpayer dollars.

I suppose you don't follow the rules of firearm handling and routinely treat guns as if they weren't loaded when they were, aren't really sure of your target (Dick Cheney!), nor care what's beyond it. Because the government put warning lables on rat poisoning you keep it around your kids and season your ribs with it on the grill. You live in flood zone and with the government tells you to evacuate you don't, if you do then you don't take food and water with you because they told you to. If you live in an earthquake zone you don't have three days of food and water. Government regulations require fire/smoke detectors but you rip them out of your house or apartment and only replace them as you sell/leave so you don't get in trouble.

Like the government can do nothing at right even by accident.

I don't think that the government has any business telling any adult they have to wear a seatbelt.  Kids cannot make an informed decision.

Govermental intrusion is bad, no matter what their excuse.

I wear my belt because I have been to hundreds of high speed accidents in my carreer.  I have seen a few who were killed while wearing a belt, mostly the car was crushed well beyond normal (t-boned by a motor home, rollover where the passenger compartment was so badly deformed that the driver's head was outside).  I have seen accidents where I would have expected to find badly injured or dead occupants, who walked away because they had belts on.  I have seen the difference in injury rates/severity.

I put my belt on, my kids do too.  Adults can make up their own minds, mostly they put them on.

Seat belt use is a thing to be encouraged, NOT mandated by law.

I had a head on collision with another car. It was dark out and raining and the rocket scientist in the other car had no lights. I was belted he was not. I directed traffic around the accident with a flashlight. The other guy was on the hood wrapped in glass. I went to work the next day, he remained in the hospital for 6 months. Genius didn't have insurance to go with his no light having car either.

Did you catch the part about the morning before they died they attended the funeral of a police officer that was killed the weekend before because he wasn't wearing his seatbelt?

IMHO, yes. I never liked that sort of half-free attitude. "You're free to raise your kids as you wish, but you damm well better put a seat belt on them". I'd say they can raise their kids as they wish, and if they do something so bad that we judge them to be unfit parents, we take the kids away and give them to someone more sane.

To hijack it even more, for the same reasons, I don't like prohibiting felons from owning guns. IMHO, if you aren't trusted to excercise every right accorded to a free man, including RKBA, then you should be in prison or six feet under.

Getting back on track, I wear my seatbelt because it's a good idea, not because the .gov tells me to.

I put on my seat belts even when I go around the block to pickup my children.  When my oldest son was 5 and riding in my car, I had to stop suddenly, he hit his head on the wildshield and cracked the it.  I was fortunate, nothing serious happened to him, today he is 19.  Never again, after that I insist that everyone wear their seat belts, and I don't even start the engine until everyone is buckled in securely.  A real hard lesson to learn that could've head more serious implications.

Whiplash, and 7 stitches, the third I suffered no injuries.
