Prosecutors have thrown the book at a carjacking suspect accused of leading police on a gunshot-punctuated chase through the West Valley.

Ramon Hernandez Martinez, 39, a career criminal, is to be arraigned Thursday on 20 felony counts returned against him Jan. 30 by a Maricopa County grand jury.

Martinez, an undocumented immigrant who has been previously deported from the United States, is being held on $1 million bail.

He was arrested Jan. 18 after police said he crashed a stolen pickup truck into a Glendale canal on 75th Avenue, south of Bethany Home Road.

The incident began when a man broke into two homes near 63rd Avenue and Buckeye Road in southwest Phoenix and stole a pickup truck, police said.

That triggered a police pursuit across the West Valley in which two other vehicles were carjacked along the way.

Shots were fired at two police officers, who returned, fire. No one was struck.

Martinez explained he was high on crack cocaine and started doing "crazy things," police said.

He was indicted on multiple counts of armed robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, auto theft, misconduct involving weapons and other violations.

Martinez has a laundry list of criminal cases dating from 1988. If found guilty of the latest charges, he could easily get sent to prison for the rest of his life.
