Ok I have an old Rem 700 ADL .30-06 and I don't shoot it anymore- I should because I get bored shooting ragged single holes with it. I've killed deer at over 400 yrs with it...blah blah- but it really is a tack driver for a stock gun that has a tigger job and nothing else.
 Anyway, I need to build up a long range gun- I should just buy a GA Gun from George or something similar but I have other weapons to pay for first.. So with that in mind, any suggestions for this rifle if I use it for a tactical rifle build? I have looked at whats available for so long I just give up and put it up anymore. I want to spend about $1000 dollars less optics. I really don't care if I use a high dollar stock- for this gun I would consider a PSS take off or something similar. What I am after is suggestions on caliber (its a long action- but I suppose I can make it .308. and internal work. If you had this rifle and wanted a no frills, all function gun what would you do? |

How about 300 win mag?
ETA: you have the long action, and 300 win mag is pretty common |

Just my $0.02, but if you have this fine old rifle that shoots like a house of fire and comes complete with lots of 'character' it would be almost a sin to modify into somethign else. I would either keep it as is and build up another precision rifle in .308 or .300 Mag, or sell this to some appreciative hunter and use the $ to finance the new toy.

I t would be a shame to mess up that fine 700, you can't get them like that anymore and the one has some good character to it.

Nice gun. You say it's accurate and works on deer at 400 yards. Sounds like you need to start looking at building a different gun (and keep that one intact). It works for you (since you shoot a raggad hole). If you change it, it might not work for you. Not many people find a gun that shoots so well it's boring, you did. That's the ONE gun you DONT want to part ways with.

+1000 for leaving it alone. If it shoots that well you'd be crazy to tear it apart. Even re-stocking it might change its accuracy considerably, depending on how it's presently bedded.
It's not an expensive gun, but it would be damn hard to replace. Buy another gun and build it. That gun is perfect as it is... Put a long range tactical scope on it if you must, but the gun itself sounds like it needs NO improvement. Yeah, that's it... put the money into an awesome scope! If this is a one-hole gun it should make good use of it AS IS!! |

I have exactly the same rifle, and it shoots almost (not quite) as good as you describe. Leave it alone, or sell it as is and start over building a new one.

That rifle is a abomination! Id weld some ears back on it and give it a good park job! Any body that thinks that a sporter rifle looks good / or does that to a fine piece of history needs to burn in hell!

Wow I have the same indentical rifle!!!
I bought mine almost 30yrs. ago it is the first large caliber rifle Iv'e ever owned, I paid $168 dollars right off the 'used' gun rack (Hey I was still a wet behind the ears teenager and $168 bucks was alot of money!!!) Mine is an .06 too, and also shoots great, mine also has tons of character and many 'kills' to it's credit. The only difference is I'll never trade, sell, or change mine.....
