[Middle English, stinging, keen, alert, from Old English smeart, causing pain.]smartly adv.
smartness n.

Regional Note: Smart is a word that has diverged considerably from its original meaning of “stinging, sharp,” as in a smart blow. The standard meaning of “clever, intelligent,” probably picks up on the original semantic element of vigor or quick movement. Smart has taken on other senses as a regionalism. In New England and in the South smart can mean “accomplished, talented.” The phrase right smart can even be used as a noun meaning “a considerable number or amount”: “We have read right smart of that book” (Catherine C. Hopley).

MENSA..... hmmmm

an answer to one question is
"Circle has one line, octagon has eight."

The answer to that question was obvious, but about as useful for proving smartness as a 6 year old's "knock knock" jokes.  Circles are actually lines, I'll write that down

And for my test for smartness

If my fireplace runs on natural gas, and my tv is on, how many flowers are in my oven?

Your score was 28 out of 30. That is an excellent score, you would have a very strong chance of passing the Mensa test and joining Mensa.

Missed the "Insatiable" question (didn't answer)and the Month/number question.

Actually the question was

10. If a circle is one, how many is an octagon?

If you've ever watched that show "Street Smarts" on GSN, you would be apalled at the number of people who would probably get that wrong.

To answer your question, the answer could either be 43 or 87.

You know, from a true mathematical perspective, this answer is incorrect.  A circle is described by the intersection of an infinite number of "lines", absolutely NOT by one.  It is, in a mathematical sense, the the exact opposite of, the antithesis of, a single line.

Yes, an octogon is formed by the intersection of eight lines.

If that is their answer, MENSA got this one wrong.

I don't doubt it for a minute.  I still haven't been to a meeting.

I joust with the eggheads on the local Yahoo group and piss off their elitist attitudes.
