"Kwailoh" is an obscure Maori word for "person who falls for patently false economic theories."  It's quite the insult as I understand.

If you were going to express the same sentiment to a person of African extraction it would start with an N.

A quick google shows it basically means "white caucasian"...but I think it probably means closer to the chinese "gwai" than anything, or maybe the hawaiian "haole"..

It's slang/derogatory term for a white guy. Can't remember the exact dialect it is, but think "gaijin" in Japanese.

Kwai Lo - Chinese for "ghost" (meaning "foreigners") and usually a referrence to white people.

Hardly the insult. Basically the Chinese equalvalent of Gai Jin.

I wouldn't consider it an insult, there's no word for "European-American" in Chinese I'm sure.  I wouldn't even say it's the same as gringo.  Funny how people complain about political correctness then fly off the handle over something like this.

I'm white and would not be insulted or care less what someone calls me. Its only words people.

Suppose to be freedom in this country to say what you like, at least there was when I was younger.

Americans have gotten to have some pretty thin skin in the last 40 years or so.

Cantonese, more specifically.  But it's actually "white ghost" or "white devil" -- ghosts in Chinese culture are malicious, ravening beings.

Well, in Mandarin, it's "wei guo ren" - foreign (hu)man (in my experience, it implies honkiness), or "mei guo ren" - American (hu)man (usually implies white;  they call blacks a lot of things here, generally negative).

ETA: oh yeah, the Taiwanese like to call foreigners "adogah" (ah-toh-gah, the 'd' is sorta 't'-like, the way they say it), which basically means "monkey".  Usually it's the annoying little kids who do it to be "funny", although sometimes the betel-nut-chewing foreigner-hating truck driver types will do it too.

Gaijin is merely foreigner.  Gai (foreign) Jin (person)  As in a foreign country would be Gaikoku and a dentist is Hanjin.  There is nothing derogatory about gaijin.
