Talking to a co-worker today and guns came up.

He said a 223\5.56*45 travels so fast that it can hit a blade of grass and disintegrate.

Any truth to this? or is it a complete exaggeration?

Was he a SEAL in Nam ?

If that was true, all .223 would disintegrate at the shooting range, every time you hit the paper target.

Naw man, them bullets TUMBLE in flight - makes 'em hit harder.

and a .45?? it can hit a man in the tip of his pinky- and knock him flat on his ass!!!!!

I wonder if he knows there are many cartridges faster than the .223?

Where does he get the grass that he's smoking? Must be some good stuff.

Well, it depends.

If the blade of grass is directly in front of a rather large rock, then yes, the bullet will disintegrate after it hits the blade of grass.

Otherwise, no. It'll zip through as if nothing were there.

They used to tell us that the 5.56 was so fast that a hit anywhere on the body, even on the little finger, would cause all the internal organs to disintegrate, that wasn't true either!

I wonder if he is talking about the 45 grain varmint round. It takes VERY little for one to disintigrate. A blade of grass might not do it but it would not take much more, a small twig possibly would do it. Very fragile round. It's not so much because they are fast but because they are constructed very lightly.

When shooting my .220-swift with 35 grain varmit loads prone they dont always make it to the target in one piece.  They seem very easily affected by small things.

no, your friend is misinformed.

What actually happens is that the bullet is moving so fast that it goes back in time and your friend only thinks it disintigrates

Tell him to hide behind a clump of grass and let you shoot at him with a 5.56x45.

Unless he plugs the bbl of your .45 with his pinky.
Then your gun will not fire at all.

My friend pulled this... out of this... .

I wouldn't say NEVER or ALWAYS. Funny words to use in logic and philosophy because long after you're dead, someone could come up with the one counterexample he needs to refute it. Spongebob ain't grass but he sure is a far ways from the density and consistency of people.

Note: Two jackets from XM193 pulled out of Spongebob at 75 yards. I was there but my friend did the digging.

Stupid small arms defense researchers, why didn't they think of making bullet-proof vests out of Spongebob.....
