My grandfather passed away this morning at 8:30.

He volunteered for the Marine Corps at age 17 in 1942. He served at Guadalcanal, Bogenville and Munda.

He returned to the states after the war, married my grandmother and adopted my 11 year old father and raised him as his own son.

He spent 20 years of his retirement living on my parents farm. He hunted, fished and walked the property once or twice a day until only a few months ago when his condition began to deteriorate. He had thanksgiving dinnner with us and the entire family.

He is a hero to his country for his service. He is a hero to his family for being an exemplar for the greatest generation.

Sorry for your loss kindstranger.

But, for his service, he received that which not many will get.

A full life, 20 years of retirement on a nice farm hunting and fishing... grateful family...

He was surely blessed.

Dread naught kindstranger. Your grandfather has just reported to his final duty station. His post is secure. It is clear Chester Dewart Leonard will live in your heart forever, which is the greatest honor ANY grandfather can receive.
