I have had 3 epidural(sp) procedures. I think they used 4 18 gauge needles. The first one I had a "leak in spinal fluid" gave me terrible headaches. These do hurt and are sore for a couple of days. Take it easy and get rest, this will help the procedure work, if it does at all. try to stay off your feet for 48 hours.
I cannot have anymore done so I am just waiting on surgery for l-4/l-5 discs. |

I had several ~ 10 yrs. ago due to a bulged disc at L5/S1. It HURT! BAD!! It didn't help with the pain at all; finally had disc surgery.

Geez I felt pain in my back just reading "epidural injection in my spine". Blood, cuts, guts, stitches, protruding bones, none of that bothers me. I don't even mind needles, as long as they aren't penetrating my spine.

yea, I had it. Hurt like a bastard, but later on it felt like I never had a problem. only one procedure for me. that was in 2003. |

This is for continuing pain after 3 spinal fusions in the L5-S1 area. Soon i need to start figuring out what i am going to do about a herniated disc and a bulged fractured disc in my neck. I think they want to do a injection in my neck which i can only assume will suck hardcore.

After the lapendectomy for the L5/S1 in 1993, I had a cervical fusion at C-3,4,5 a year ago due to a bulged disk after an auto accident where I had the experience of being a pin-ball after a young women hit me on the right side of my vehicle, then bounced off the left retaining wall, then rear-ended me as she bounced across the middle lane...hitting the right retaining wall, then impacted me on the right of my vehicle. Geez. Two weeks later, experienced numbness and tingling down my right arm and to my thumb and forefinger. A year after that, had no feeling at all in the arm. I'm only 45 yrs. old, but I can swear it's true...it's not the years, it's the miles that wear you down!

If it makes you fellas feel better i am only 30.... i have to look forward to at least more injections in my neck and spine...probably a nice hole in the side of my neck and shit,ugh,yuck

I had pain at the site of my epidural injection for several years afterwards. The doctor who gave it to me did it too high, also, and I felt like I was suffocating.

I've had 5 total for a herniated disc at l5/s1. Now my doc wants to do a disc replacement but my ins. won't pay for it. On top of that, the bulging disc I had in my neck due to a car accident is now herniated causing extreme pain in the neck, into my shoulders and numbness into the hands. Physical therapy only makes it more painful and increases the numbness. I go for an EMG next week and then we will determine a course of action for this problem. |

Yes, I have, for a swollen disc .... I am pretty good at dealing with medical procedures without a problem. But having that done was a very disturbing experience. It worked like a charm though. Well worth it! |

I just remembered I got back injections and I felt worse afterwards. It felt like someone stuck a ice cube under my skin next to my bulging disc.
It burst a month later

I had all 3 in the series. I have 2 bad discs in the lower lumbar (VERY low back).
First one was the worst. It felt like they were tickling my belly button from the inside out.....and not in a good way.

If it hurt to get an epidural, you need to find a different doctor! I've had several, the doctor told me to tell him if anything hurt, it wasn't supposed to! The only "pain" is the injection of lydocaine to deaden the skin, after a few seconds of burning it's all over, I had NO residual pain from my epidurals, and yes they were steroids for back pain.

__ It doesn't have anything to do with the doctor, but the severity of the disk bulge. Remember that the epidural fluid is being placed in the spinal cord...eventually adding pressure upon a nerve already pinched. It works for some, not all. Ed |

After a few days i have to say it doesnt seem to be working. I have a dull aching pain in my ass cheek and left thigh. So much for injections :(

WindGapAR15...'sorry to hear you're still having problems...ideas? Just one running through my mind. First, have you or are you able to see another neurologist? Just as you would seek a second opinion for car repairs, so, too, for yourself.
You don't want another opinion for surgery, I understand. Perhaps another intrepretation of your condition may be helpful. I know this sucks...just try to be hopeful, and get another professional opinion. Best wishes, Ed |

Its okay,i have sen several neuro and ortho guys over the past couple years. my next option is to remove my "intstrumentation" in other words dig out my screws and bolts. I'll get that done next year. Right now i want to deal with my arthritis. That shit is annoyingly painful.

the ortho guy seems to think that if my nerve issues dont clear up through other means that the only thing left to do would be to wait until all my spinal fusion takes place then go back in and take out the titanium to see if thats whats screwing up my nerves

Gotcha. I had heard that there was some experimentation being done re: artificial disks. I wonder if they are ever available, would it be possible to un-do a fusion and use artificial disks?
Hey, did you ever ask your doctor at what point your condition may actually make you "disabled" to the extent of Social Security benefits? |

I recieved SSI benefits for the period i was out my first spinal fusion back in 2002. I got a years worth retroactively after being turned down the first time and going through a court hearing where the judge ruled favorably in about ten minutes. I had a lawyer and he took a quarter of it.
This time around i had two seperate fusions from the rear and the front spaced out 3 months. I will be down for about 16 months or so. This may change as we are looking into whether i have a bone issue. I found arthitis,degenerative disc disease and a herniated disc in my neck which i will have to get taken over eventually. I was denied this time which is ridiculous snce they gave it to me already for something that wasnt as debilitating. I would assume they missed someting in my records. THe crappy part is being broke and waiting for them to get in gear and handle the problem. As for further surgeries all i foresee is one taking out my metal. I had absolutely no success with using my own bone as fusion material so they used artificial bone and from the x-rays it seems to be working. We'll see i guess? |

Gap,
Have your epidurals done by a pain management specialist. They do the injections under fluoroscopy and it reduces the hunting for the right spot. It makes the after effects much less painfull since they're not digging around in there. I had a lot in my cervical area before my cervical fusion. They should initially be done in a series of three about two weeks apart. Don't expect any results for about 4-5 days after the injection. They might use other oral meds in conjunction with the injections. Mine worked pretty well for about five years. Ultimately had to have the fusion. If your in Wind Gap we're about 15 minutes apart. In the past 2 years i have had right around 10.
I have also had 3 major back surgeries. Edit: Just add a few details. I have had enormous pain down my right leg and can not feel my last 3 toes nor move them. Not one Doctor has been able to help. right now i have Hardware installed (Titanium rods and screws). I am not able to walk,stand sit or do anything for more than 15-30 minutes at a time. if i do i am bed ridden for days unable to cope with the pain. I take massive amounts of medication which does no good. I take meds on schedule and they only help me feel some what better for about 10-15 minutes so i eagerly await the next time i am allowed to take medicines. I am the type of person who HATES taking even aspirin unless i can't deal with a headache. Due to not being able to be the MAN of my house i have had to see a Shrink and begin to take even more medicines (anti- depressants). my wife has been there for me 100% which i am grateful for. anyway.. sorry to hijack your thread.. just needed to vent a little i guess. |

I am only feeling the usual discomfort in my back,ass and upper thighs and the restless leg syndrome in my feet. Alot of my issues are from my ankle problems right now. I have some problems with different painful areas overlapping and making ti hard to figure out whats what. Im really just getting frustrated at all this shit and half of me just wants to keep on the pain meds and be able to operate.
