'Heston no icon,' co-star says

NEW YORK, July 30 (UPI) -- Tim Roth played gun-toting thugs in a number of
bloody dramas during the 1990s, but the British actor and family man told
reporters recently that he abhors real-life violence and believes in gun
control.

That meant that starring as Charlton Heston's simian son in Tim Burton's
new "Planet of the Apes" movie presented a big moral dilemma for Roth since
Heston is president of the National Rifle Association.

Asked what it was like to work with Heston, who starred in the 1968
classic version of "Planet of the Apes," Roth replied: "It's tricky for me.
I've got to tell you it was difficult for me because of the NRA. I mean, I
found that very hard."

The star of Quentin Tarantino's violent "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp
Fiction" went on to say that he didn't argue politics with Heston because
"it's inappropriate in the workplace."

But he emphasized that he doesn't share the same opinion as many movie
fans who think of Heston as an icon.

"I'm aware of (his reputation). I'm sorry, but I've got kids. (Heston's
involvement in the NRA) has taken away from his reputation, to be honest
with you" Roth said.

"Everyone is welcome to their politics, I completely agree with that, but
(Heston) is such a force. ... (Guns) are problems that could affect my
family. I have to have an opinion on that. But I didn't walk out. I was very
worried when I found out he was going to be in (the movie).

"But actually, he was all right. There was a guy in a rubber face on a bed
and I worked with him. And he was all right. What are you going to do? He
just went through four hours of makeup. Bless him. It's a tough gig," he
added.

Roth said he was able to shelve his feelings and do the part because "I am
an actor."

"So I'm acting. And I was completely in makeup, and so was he, so that
makes it easier ... and (director) Tim (Burton) said a couple of things to
me that made it possible because that's what directors have to do. He
straightened me right out and made it very, very
simple for me to get through that role."

Meanwhile, Roth's "Apes" co-star Mark Wahlberg offered journalists little
apology when questioned about his own real-life past, which is peppered with
violent and criminal incidents.

Once known as a rapper named Marky Mark, Wahlberg grew up as one of nine
children in a racially mixed, but very tense area of Massachusetts. He

started taking drugs at an early age and constantly got into fights.

He served 45 days in 1988 for assault after he and some friends, high on
PCP, robbed a pharmacy, then tried to steal a case of beer from a Vietnamese
refugee as he emerged from his car. Wahlberg swung a pole and took out the
man's eye.

Now that he's 30 years old, "The Perfect Storm" and "Boogie Nights" star
has this to say about his violent past: "I've never hidden my past. I've
just focused on my future. Unfortunately, in the world we live in today most
people are interested in what's gone on in my past than they are in what's
going on in the present."

Wahlberg explained that his past has helped him evolve as a person, as
well as helping him play some of the characters he has portrayed on-screen.

"I learned from my experiences and my mistakes, and I would have liked to
go back and done certain things differently, but it made me the person I am
today. You can't live life with regrets, it would make your life miserable,"
he said.

The one-time bricklayer added that he is amazed at how good his life has
turned out.

"Yeah, I mean there's part of me that says, 'It's
supposed to turn out like this, no big deal.' But then when you get an
opportunity to look at all the different things I've done, the good and bad,
(and) it's pretty amazing. I've probably done more in 20 years than most
people do in a lifetime. I have a lot more to do."

"Planet of the Apes" was No. 1 at the box office this weekend.

Tim Roth abhors violence???? Yeah, he abhors it so much that he won't star in violent movies. Oh wait....  

Does that also mean in an offhanded way that Charlton Heston, the NRA, and essentially all of us LOVE violence? Cause we're so busy knocking each other off here in the States. Look how peaceful things are in the U.K. Doh!

The NRA is doing good.  When people fear the NRA and are uncomfortable with us, we know that they are doing the right thing, so lets pour it on and stick it to the antis.  This EXACTLY what we want.  The guys at the NRA are not paid to be nice guys, they are paid to defend our rights.

It constantly amazes me how actors such as Tim Roth, redundantly interpret individuals and groups who support the second amendment as entities that glorify violence.  Here's a guy who makes his living portraying violent men in sinister roles, hypocritically stating he "has a family to think about," all the while "glorifying" violence in such movies and "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" in which he happily accepts a fat pay-check for his work.   If this is not the true meaning of hypocrisy, I really don't know what is.  Mr. Roth, if you don't like the politics in this country, or the rights/freedoms that Americans enjoy, move back to your native England.  

But in the end money proved more important than his morals.  Fits right in with the other antis.

Heston does go into an arguably anti gun speech along the lines of the gun is a symbol of their ingenuity and of their cruelty.

I haven't seen this one.  But, as I understand it, Heston's "speech" is pro-gun in that he says guns are the tools humans have to prevent ape oppression.

A good soldier is a good soldier, period. he (wherever he may come from) is willing to fight and die for his country and his people, and that alone deserves-no....DEMANDS respect. Good question but I think the answer sucks. We tend to lend credence to popular figures (film, music, and sports) regardless of whether or not they may actually know something. Were he to say that he abhors the firearm situation in England and wishes it could be more like the US, we'd be cheering instead of jeering. Basically, popular figures are useful tools for us or dangerous weapons against us. That said, lets sign on to his website and let him know how we feel!!!

But I feel I need to apologize to my fellow board members for my use of profanity in my post.  I still fell just as strong in my opinion of steel rat as I did when I posted but there is no excuse for my name-calling.  That lowers myself to a level where I don't want to be.  If I can't get my point across without name calling, I shouldn't be arguing at all.

Edited because I forgot to say how hypocritical elitists such as Mr. Roth sicken me.  Regardless of their political persuasion.  I saw and enjoyed the movie this weekend (obviously prior to hearing of Mr. Roth's antics).  The benefits of having a pre-teen son.

Heston's little speech about guns in the movie needs to be in context.  He pulls the gun out of some relics and says to Tim Roth that it is evidence of man's cunning and ingenuity and more powerful than 100 spears or something.  It would be like the Japanese pointing to the A-bomb and using the same words.....the Apes and Humans were at WAR!, the significant fact.

Roth said he was uneasy working with Heston and talked to Director Tim Burton, who "set him straight".  I can only guess what the words were....."Look, I'll give you all the bananas you can eat!"

From the moment I took my first breath, I had all of the rights bestowed upon the royals of the UK. For those who are born as subjects, I suspect it would be a hard concept for them to swallow.
