First it ruined MTV. Now it has infiltrated my pop radio station, popping up unexpectedly and raising my blood pressure when it does. Drives me up the wall. Ditto when some dickweed pulls up next to me with his bass blaster spewing out the same.
It's not music, music involves "notes". Somebody must like it. Why? |

I'm not sure how it caught on.
And I'm really suprised that it's lasted this long. I keep waiting for it to go away. |

Aren't we all suppose to listen to this to prove that we are not bigots? Besides don't they have some kind of right to share their cultural arts with you.

Society accepts baggy-pants-wearing, jobless, get-girl-pregnant-and-leave, crack-smoking, low-rider-car-driving, bass-speaker-blasting, rap playing people of society as a normal part of their culture.

I'm sick of it too. My 12yr old son likes that $hit too. Thank goodness my daughter outgrew it! Perhaps he will too. I'd hate to think my son worships that culture. It would kill me!

Just another way found for the music industry to bring in more dollars. Nothing but a bunch of damn garbage as far as I am concerned.

My 3 daughters stick me with it. It is everything I dont stand for. Misuse of guns, killing cops...well, you know the rest. I dont teach racism but when they watch BET all the time, WTF? Yup, MTV is ruined.

Quoted: I heard that Disco was coming back. Maybe that'll do it. View Quote I would prefer Disco any day of the week. I grew up on Southern Rock - Skynyrd, Mollyhatchet, Blackfoot, Allman Brothers, Charlie Daniels, etc. BUT, I use to keep a few Disco cassettes just for the ladies if you know what I mean! Funk, Motown, Disco is cool, but rap sucks. If you ever want to see a funny as heck parody of rap music, get a copy of the movie "Fear of a Black Hat". It never made a big hit but it is a story about a rap group told as a documentary that follows their success and their split up of the group, single careers, etc. VERY irreverent! |

I listen to a LOT of music from all genres. One thing to consider is that just because the crackhead-gangsta losers listen to rap does not make it bad. I have seen quite a few scumbags with awesome guns at shooting ranges over the years - but that does not make the guns bad. I know that a lot of you probably hate/dislike Eminem - but I love his music - I love the way people react to it without giving him (or other talented artists) a chance.

I am listing to rap right now. It will never be better than rock, but it is better than that bubblegum pop sh!t.

It appeals to mans Primal side. and lets face it, some folks are a little closer to "Primal" than others.
Just as war drums were used to put you in the right mindset to rage into battle, rap enrages certain people into violence. [x] BTW,just to be fair, Heavy metal, bagpipes and certain classical scores, could very easily rage me into battle !! difference is, I can control myself, while others cant.[:D] |

A different perspective on this. Here's the reason I enjoy some rap/hip-hop.
First let's define what I mean by rap/hip-hop. Real hip-hop to me is Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Common, Eric B and Rakim, etc (those who know will follow with the rest). Alot of the shit out now is money, cars, ho(s), bullshit. Those examples are examples of the current paradigm--style over substance, etc. That is not TRUE hip-hop. True hip-hop is the stuff with something to say about the current state of our society and the resistance to the over-whelming spiritless-ness of it. The guiding force of our current society is the forces who oppose Creator and the societal behaviors that flow from that. True Hip-Hop expresses a displeasure of that, and a resistance to it, and therefor an obedience to self-reliance, unity, and Creator. Many (and I'm not saying all) of the voices I hear in opposition to hip-hop as I have defined it really have at their core an opposition to the color/race of the artists bringing you the hip-hop. |
|
97% of the Rap Music that is heard on the radio, seen on MTV or BET, or promoted/distributed by the corporate owned record companies tpday is pure $hit. It is made for no other reason but to make money. The greater evil is that it corrupts the minds of our youth. However, there is some Rap Music being created by some true artist that is truly great. Most of it will never be heard on any commercial radio/video station. The sad thing is that the orgins of Rap Music are not to be found in the $hit talking, woman hating, violence glorifying, fake gangster, materialism we hear today.
As for MTV.... it has always sucked! |
|
Rap/hip hop is here to stay. Sorry.
Sometimes I like rap, sometimes I hate it. What I really dislike is when they sample old rock/pop songs and rap over the melody they stole. Eminem's musicians can at least come up with catchy little melodies. Asswipes like Puff Daddy and Tupac have to steal theirs. The absolute most gut-churning example was Puff Daddy's song "Come With Me", where he rapped over Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. Sacreligious. Even worse is that Page appeared in the video. I mean, sampling is one thing. Rappers have been sampling since the Beastie Boy's first album (which had great samples from Zep and Black Sabbath that worked) but Puff Daddy goes way over the line, and sounds like shit to boot. He can get away with it because I guess his core fans haven't heard songs like "Every Breath you Take" and "Kashmir", and probably thought he wrote the songs. |

To sum it all up,
[red]RAP SUCKS!!!![/red] How can unintelligable spoken word, mixxed over computer generated noise and sound effects, be considered "music". I know I remember my dad saying the same thing about rock music back in the `70's, but these days he likes rock (after hearing rap). Hell, we all used to wear "Disco Sucks" t-shirts in the old days, but now if I go into a club and they play some disco, it's a relief! Sam Kennison was right. |
|
scottjimenez - That is exactly what I was thinking, only I was goint to blame Elvis for the downfall of society. Teens want to rebel, and will keep pushing the limits to be on the edge. While I am not a big fan of rap, I like it better than elevator music. If you don't want your kids listening to it, you can do what the did in Southpark. Start listening to it and calling it cool. Buy some CDs, and wear baggy pants. Your kids will be so repulsed, they will start listening to classical.
What really hits my nerve is country music these days. Its sounds more like rock than country western. There is no more western left in it. I grew up hearing Hank Sr., Patsy Cline, The Gatlin Brothers, Merle Haggard, etc. on 8-track tapes. To rebel, I listened to AC/DC, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, etc. I know the adults back then couldn't stand it. The more things change, the more they stay the same. |

It seems to me that what ever genre of music is popular sucks. No matter how great the musical accomplishments of the genre's pioneers, as soon as there is serious money involved it becomes populated with lame copy cats that wouldn't know an original musical thought if it bit them on the ass. They might know what the music is supposed to sound like but the compositions are simple and the lyrics vacuous. There were a lot of really crappy rock bands but only still listen to the great ones. Disco was pretty stinky at the time, but it isn't so bad now because only the best examples survive the test of time. Rap is todays disco and it sure does suck. I hate rap as much as anyone, I'm sure. I do however own one rap album by Run DMC. It is actually damn good music. If I were willing to wade through the rest of the Rap shit (I'm not), I could probably find other examples of good rap albums. Perhaps in 10 or 15 years, I'll be glad when some good old Rap comes on the radio to give me a break from whatever lame ass music is in vogue.

I liked rap when I was 11-13. Grew up and realized it was crude, and immature like I was at that age. My deduction is that people who like this Eminem trash and rap are of the same mentality or mental caliber.

Cant we all just get along?
I just finished burning a new MP3 CD for my car. It is a good mix of Stone Temple Pilots, Rolling Stones, Ice Cube, The Who, Metallica, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and more. If you cant open your eyes to what's going on around you then you are no better then our "feral" government. "bahhhhh" jus another sheep without my gun. |

Expose, Trinere, Debie Deb, etc. That's about it. When I was a Sr. in H.S. and part of college I DJ'd at a club in S.F. Been going to clubs since I was about 15(had fake ID) Grew up on this stuff.
I use to listen to a lot of metal when I was younger. Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden etc. However as I got into H.S., the hotter chicks were into dance music and r&b. So I changed gears. Got rid of the tight jeans and grungy clothes and turned a lil hip hop-ish and preppy. Got together with a couple of guys. Got a mobile DJ started. We started out doing Catholic shool dances since we all came from Catholic school. After a year we got somewhat know in the bay area, and we started participating in DJ battles, sucked at first, but started placing after awhile. Was great cause mobile DJ's in S.F. were kinda like a band, you gather up a following. You get to know the club DJ's and by going to clubs you get to know the staff. You never have to wait in line, and sometimes your drinks are free. And there no off limits area in the club to you. When chicks knew you as a DJ, they pretty much throw themselves at you cause you can get em in at clubs. as I said, AHHHHHH those were the days. Was hard work mobile DJ'ng though. We had Klipsch LaScala speakers which were about 150lbs each, the records, amps, lights, the turntable mixer, monitor speaker, all needed lugging around. It was like moving every weekend. The rest is history. |

Never did weddings, etc. Only parties for buddies and battles.
Been a battle jock since 83. Our crew DJ started teaching me how to mix back in the breakin days. Got some gear and went to work. I've done clubs and radio, but mostly did it for the girls and my own interest in music. We used to have massive dj wars. We have someone running a Roland backbeat and we'd just start stacking beats and rippin cuts. I've still got tapes. |
