Sometimes people forget that swearing actually serves a purpose in communicating. The fact that it is seen as slightly taboo is a part of that. Often swear words add emphases to your speech that otherwise would not be there. That is why I get annoyed at people who bitch about people who swear (obviously I am not discounting that there is a time and a place when you shouldn't do so, just as a show of respect) and say that people who use swear words do so to make up for a lacking vocabulary. This is bullshit. Some people are quite skilled when it comes to swearing, and display a mastery of the language while doing so.
I tell people that when I swear, it is to add necessary emphasis. If we were not permitted to swear on this board we would not be capable of reaching a certain level and style of communication that we do. Who the fuck cares about a swear word when you are discussing something like attacks on our Constitution, War, terrorist attacks, etc.? A little bit of perspective goes a long way. If you are discussing terrorists that are murdering non-combatant women and children, and somebody is all upset over a cuss word, then they obviously are not grasping reality. The words in our language that are considered swear words are just as functional and carry just as much meaning as the rest of the words we use to communicate. They have a time and a place in our language. |
