New Orleans hurricane victim hits the jackpot

NEW ORLEANS, Oct 5 (Reuters) - A New Orleans storm victim shelled out $4.25 in quarters and won a $1.6 million jackpot at a Louisiana casino where she had stopped to play the slot machines on her way to shop at a Wal-Mart discount store.

"I am a casino fanatic, it relaxes my nerves," said Jacquelyn Sherman, a 57-year-old retired librarian whose fortune changed on Tuesday. "I like winning but I never expected to win like this."

Sherman has been sleeping on her sister's floor in Opelousas, Louisiana, since the storm ravaged her house and killed hundreds of New Orleans residents in late August.

Sherman said she is determined to find a new, comfortable home back in the Big Easy.

The casino where she got lucky with the slot machine was Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino in Opelousas, near Lafayette where many victims of Katrina and later Hurricane Rita sought shelter.

With regard to Wal-Mart, Sherman said: "We haven't gotten there yet."

WTF.

I think she should be using her money for more important things, not slot machines.  I bet she used the $2,000.00 FEMA card.  Gambling would be the last thing on my mind.

if she is truely a retired "librarian", she is likely not the typical ninth ward refugee.

I read this and immediately thought - what the hell is a person who just lost their home doing spending their money on slots?  Something doesn't sound right.  Good for her and all, but come on...

I wonder if the red cross will want their 2000.00 debit card back from her now.

Good for her also.

Congrats.

Hear about the convicted felon they caught after a high speed motorcycle chase? Caught him with a pistol and 4 FEMA cards; life is good

Faster then that most likely.
Figure probably 700,000 after taxes. Bet over half that goes to a new house, then a good portion to all the excess shit she "needs" for the house like a new BMW in the driveway, plasma TV etc etc.

If I hit it big and lived in NO, I'd haul ass and get out.  Take your winnings and insurance money and get out, yesterday.  No way in hell, I'd be around for the next one.

Especially since she is staying with her sister and not living
off the Federal dole in "temp" housing. She probably bugged
out and now she's getting lumped in with the looters.

If she is not on the FEMA dime, then she could have spent
her money on booze for all I care.

I'm assuming that all of you people looking down on her for
playing slots have donated cash to the victims in lieu of
spending it on frivalities...

All her friends and relatives, including 4th cousins will all try to get in on the action and get a cut.

I think I am related to her.  It's time for a reunion!

Me too, but how can you say she didn't make the right choice?  Kind of like a poker game I once had with a friend who was a terrible player.  When it came down to me and him he kept raising and raising like he had a good hand. He had shit the whole time. But he placed all his hopes on a longshot on the river card..........and his hand came together to beat mine.  His rationale was completely stupid, but how can you say he made the wrong choice?  He won.
