I've just started doing work for a firm as an individual contractor.  They're cutting me checks based on my rate I quoted them.

How do I make sure I don't get fucked up with the IRS?

Keep all receipts....any that might even come close to pertaining to work.  Clothes receipts, utility receipts, rent receipts, tools receipts, software receipts, hotel receipts.  Make a mileage log and keep it up to date, you can deduct miles, oil, maintenance.  And consult a CPA asap.  You will sorely regret this decision if you dont
