What was the career you always wanted to have?

Did you pursue it in any way?

And what do you do now?

For me, I always wanted to be a Marine Biologist or Oceanographer - never pursued it after I got out of school, and am now a Police Dispatcher.

I wanted to be President of the United States...or at least an astronaut.

But I grew up and figured out that wasn't going to happen so I became a Civil Engineer

I always thought it would be cool to be a police dispatcher or to manage radio equipment for some Law Enforcment departments.

Now I have a degree in Electrical Engineering and I draw pictures of lighting layouts and conduit runs for other people to build.  I hate it, but that is not related to the "what" part of what I am doing.  If I could find another job for the same pay I would walk out tommorrow.

I did that for 9 months out of college, just to get to Dallas, then went into electronics because I hated designing water treatment plants and it was not advanced enough - electrical and electronics are totally different applications of "electrical engineering".

Instead I sit here dealing with crooks.   On the bright side only 13 years to go I get to retire at 50.   I wonder if Mike will be hiring .......

<---------  See avatar.  Play pro baseball.

KC offered me a minor league deal when I was 17 - my dad wouldn't sign - wanted me to graduate HS, then go to the AF Academy.

Wrecked my dirt bike shortly thereafter - broke arm in a coupla places - got a big old clump of Cortisone there now - but still play.

Spent 20 years in the military straightening paper clips - did a damn fine job at it, too.

.Gov taught me a bunch about medical stuff (and paper clips).

Was first registered with the NREMT-P in 1980 - maintained until 1997 (IIRC - cards in safe deposit box), so when I came back to the States in 98, figured I'd try to get on with a FD or something.  I was too old for that - max hiring was 37 or so - I was 41.  Bunch of crap.

So I went to work for HEB.  They hired me as a Pharmacy Trainer.  I could not stand being cooped up in a small area with a bunch of whiney women and spineless men - so I bailed after 6 months.  I have zero ability to deal with office politics.  Zero.

I have worked as an electrician, and first got a Journeyman's license in 81, so I went back to work at that.

See there.  I wanted to run a game preserve in Montana and I ended up being an attorney.  However, I don't practice anymore.  Now I own a software company that makes a borning niche product for health care.

well i had two dream jobs.  one of them i ended up with. boy was i wrong.

i wanted to be a computer programmer, well i got it. it was the only thing i was good at, since i was in 5th grade i had been writing code.

well move up the ladder to analyst and the director then move back down the ladder to senior analyst.

same old stuff after 16 years im tired of the Whole IT thing. i wait for 4 more years to get my retirement at 36. then i will go back to school and do something i want.

come on 4 more years.

it pays some time to start a job at 16. and work thru college at the same place.

Indiana isn't much better than Kansas =)  Now all I can do is dream of Retiring on a nice small yacht.  Figure if I can afford it, I'll start in the gulf, and work my way North during the winters, and South to the Keys during the summer.  But that's a loooong way off

I'm halfway there. Ideally, I'd do nothing but trials. I'd get the file about 10 days before jury selection (though I've successfully tried them less than 24 hours after being retained), some monkey would be responsible for placing witnesses at my beck and call, and I'd do final prep and try 'em. That's a lot of my job, but sadly I have to do other things to make a living.

I thought you guys just sat around, made up catchy rhyming phrases, and slept with your assistants!   Kidding!

I got an offer from the prosecutor here, said that if I'd get my JD, he'd guarantee me a DP job (family friend).  I just couldn't bear the thought of leaving the wife for two years to finish the JD.  Good on ya!

+1 on the hedge fund operative or commodities trader.

18B-Weapons Sergeant, US Army Special Forces.  Sounds like a damn close to perfect job for me.  If I could get details like close protection of Maxim covergirls, then it would be perfect.
