I responded to a thread asking for what lurkers there were thinking. I responded, and was having a completely civil discussion with a few of them. A good number of others simply called me names. Then my account was locked. I open a new account, to inform those who I was politely discussing with that I had been locked and could not continue the discussion, and that account was promptly locked and my post deleted. They have no interest in any sort fo real discourse there. Pretty amazing.

As bad as the system is right now, it's still needed. It does need to be overhauled. My daughter was on a rant about it the other day. She is supporting two small children and is working fulltime. She still needs it because she doesn't make enough to get food on the table.

She wants off it so bad, but can't. There's not even a way for her to further her education so she can get off of it.

Where do opinions like this come from?

There are TONS of government and private programs that will provide a grant or a loan. All the talk about how a poor person is trapped in their station forever is uninformed claptrap. Like many other items, you have to call and ask about your options. Sometimes, you won't be aware of additional options until you've exhausted the ones you are aware of.
I've seen enough that you can't convince me that there aren't social programs (private or public) for nearly every situation. The Democrats are trying to say that they've FAILED in their promises for the last 75 years, when they complain that the poor are stuck at their station!

Some thoughts:

A post where they said you were wrong because the constitution says the .gov should "Promote the general welfare". This is the fundamental difference between conservatives and liberals. They think if means that the government should PROVIDE the general welfare.

After it was first posted (From Thanksgiving 2003) she did a lot to mend her fences with Servicemen. Primarily those who are stationed at Fort Drum in upper New York State

I was locked over there for no reason whatsoever a few years back.

I started an account, I participated in civil discussion - much the same as I do here. I just avoided threads that would make me argue too much, and generally just tried to provide a reasonable opinion. Since I'm pretty socially liberal, a European citizen, a member of the ACLU - AND a university professor who drives a freaking Volvo, you'd think those guys would love me.

One day, I was simply banned - without any explanation whatsoever. I emailed the administrations multiple times, not complain or confrontational, but simply politely asking for an explanation. I never received any response.

The ONLY explanation I have ever been able to come up with is that someone over there complained that I also post on ar15.com (since I also used my DK-Prof handle on D.U.) and I was then immediately banned - not for saying ro doing anything wrong, but just for the crime of being different, and potentially having different opinions in the privacy of my own head.

Those people are complete fucking lunatics!
