In other countries, is the national flag flown as much as it is here in America? Just asking because I was driving down the road and a saw US flags on 5 houses in a row and I though to myself: If someone was here, there would be no mistaking you were in the USA.

In my previous travels I have seen nothing of the sort.

In fact that is one of the things that a visiting delegation of Iraqis noticed - they could not comprehend why everyone was flying the flag when it was not mandated.

I'm looking at 24 square feet of Old Glory on the wall to the right of me.

I spent a week in El Salvador once. We've even got more of their flags here than they have there.

Their cops have way cooler weapons though. Security guards all over the place with riot 12 ga.'s. Hot chic cops with Uzi's.

I am in Japan now and in the rural areas, I would think about 5% of houses fly the Japanese flag on holidays which is the custom.
In apartment blocks I would guess about 1 in a thousand
All police, JSDF bases, fire stations, government run university’s, have the national flag and the prefectual flag out in the daytime.
Surprisingly, only about one third of government offices have the flag out.

I think it depends. There are many, many areas here in the U.S. where you won't see the flag displayed quite as prominently as you've noted. In my neighborhood I haven't seen a single other flag within the surrounding 40 houses.

Certainly in England I've noticed that the flag is shown in many locations but not really presented quite the same way as here (flagpoles, house displays, etc.). Generally I've seen it in windows and on the wall, bumper stickers, clothing, etc.

I also noticed the Canadian flag a lot in the more rural areas like Alberta, Canadians seem to be pretty patriotic as well.

I think one of the biggest reasons for not flying flags so much in other countries has to do with the dictatorships of WW2, they might not want to emulate the extrem nationalism in any way. A german woman I know has also mentioned something along these lines to me when discussing how so many Americans display flags on their cars, houses, places of business etc.

Are you speaking from experience? If so, what countries in the EU have you seen this in? Because if not, you are either

(1) talking out of your ass, or
(2) NOT describing ALL European Union countries.

I've been to Denmark twice in the past year, and I did not see a SINGLE - not one - EU flag in the whole two weeks I was there. Both times, I spent a lot of time in Copenhagen, as well as driving around much of northern Zealand. Lots of Danish flags flying, and lots of Danish banners* - but no EU flags anywhere to be seen.

While I was there in the summer, it was just after one of the referendums elsewhere in Europe that rejected the EU constitution, and I did see an EU coffin, in a demonstration that was celebrating the death of the EU constitution

* - just to clarify, there is an official "banner" version of the Danish flag that a lot of people fly on their home flagpole. The reason for that is that you are allowed to fly the banner at night, but not the flag - and in Denmark, you do not see people fly their flag in the dark (it is considered very poor taste to do so). So many people get the banner and fly that on their flagpole, instead of the full flag. Here is a pic:

Yes. I currently live in Singapore. On the HDBs(gov subsidized apartments) maybe 1 house in every 10 flies the flag. On holidays it goes up to maybe 1 in 4.
It's kindof a corporate state.

'Don't see too many 'round here 'cept for in front of schools, gov't buildings etc....
What I find appauling is the condition of some of the flags being displayed.

I mean... It's out there in front for all to see and noone notices that it's in tatters?

As an aside...
The flag(s) in front of my workplace were once raised up-side-down by mistake...
The local PD called in to ask if everything was okay.... 'Seems some old war vet drove by and noticed the flags being inverted and called the police.... Aparently it's a signal of distress...

I saw quite a few Canadian flags draped inside picture windows when I visited British Columbia. This was in a neighborhood that struck me as being middle to lower middle class. I also saw a Confederate navy jack. The people I met in BC were fine folks. They are nothing like the pseudo-European socialist Canadians we see depicted in the news.

I noticed a lot of flags in Canada. Not as many as here but more than I've seen in Japan, South Korea, The Philipines, Mexico or Jamaica.

I’ll have to side with DK-Prof on this one as far as the EU flag goes.

I lived in Germany for over 13 years and can never remember one instance where I saw a German National flag flying on private property or at a place of residence.

My wife is a born and raised German and she says the same thing and has commented on how we fly the American flag more here than the Germans fly their flag.

Now, I have seen different configurations of the country of origin stickers you see on euro vehicles, many with the countries flag on them.

Nope. Not in Germany they dont....but the local who runs the carwash down the road off post has an American flag flying over his carwash on a regulation pole.

Gets my business every time - does a good job, and loves to bullshit around afterwards. Always worth a laugh.

I've been all over the world and not seen as many flags as I see here. I also have to agree with DK on the EU flag. Been to Europe many many times as recently as June (GB) and yes the Union Jack was out but not like here.

I see LOTS of Afghan flags here. Probably more than I see US flags back home.

Lots of tribal colors/flags as well.

And once a guy franticly trying to take down a Taliban flag as we drove in to the villiage.... life is hard when you are stupid...............
