Per the DU meatsack that wrote the "Fuck the South" letter here, I decided to come up with my reason to why the divorce rate may be higher in the south.
The writer told us all that Taxachussetts has the lowest divorce rate in the country, and that the 10 lowest divorce rates in the country are all in the North East. I can only come up with one answer to this... now bear with me. Massachussetts like CT, NJ, NY etc are states filled with socialist whackos who want to depend on the government to protect them. Now, out of that small cluster of areas and DC, the rest of the country (with the exception of California and Louisiana) are pretty much normal, level headed people with decency. The northeast comes into this, because they have a limited number of concentrated whackos, so when they find someone who is as loopy as they are, they figure it's a keeper, because there can't possibly be anyone as nuts as they are to begin with. The southern states have a broader number of people to interact with countrywide, so if we make wrong decisions, we can move on with our lives, and hunt for another fish in the sea. And there you have it. The divorce rate in the south is higher because we have more compatible people to choose from.

I think a more reasonable explanation is different views about sex. In more liberal areas sex outside of wedlock is viewed as completely normal and not looked down upon at all.
In more conservative areas sex outside of wedlock, while perhaps common place, is still looked down upon. Hence, people in more concervative areas have greater motivation (guilt free sex) to get married, a motivation that does not exist in liberal areas. So, people who are less compatible will get married in conservative areas as opposed to liberal areas. |

I think it's because a person can only live with another person for a fixed time frame, before going nuts, so by marrying at 12 or 13 then that limit is reached at an earlier age.

Lotta starter marriages happen down here. Get married, don't work out, end it. It's not a catholic area. Better that than raising a bunch of sheeple to live on the dole.
Blame it on minorities too. They get married much younger and divorce much faster. Lets play the race card.  |

No, I think the divorce rate's higher in the South and the Bible Belt because it's the convention that people get married young to their first love. It's expected of them.
I've noticed this being around young guys from rural areas who are, to be unkind, redneck hicks. Their attitude towards girls is that if you don't plan on marrying your girlfriend, what are you doing with her when you could be finding a wife? The whole idea of dating a girl you had no plans on marrying struck them as stupid. Two of them got married to their girlfriends in the 6-7 month space I was working with them. They were less than a year out of high school. |

Maybe in the northeastern states with the lower divorce rates the laws are less favorable for men seeking divorce so they grin and bear it.
After all, they're just stupid men, they don't need but 50% of their earnings. |

Well I do know that is some southern states marriage rates are much higher, I think Tennessee’s marriage rate is double most places in the Northeast.
Also contrary to what many assume they know many Southern States have very easy/streamlined divorce laws. |

I looked into it when that tripe first starting making the rounds. They don't tell you the full story.
Compare the divorce rates per capita to those of marriage rates. A very interesting trend appears. Those states with the highest rates of marriage have the highest divorce rates. Likewise, states like MA that have the lowest marriage rates also have the lowest divorce rates. Can't get a divorce if you aren't married. Maybe because of a higher population. Maybe we get less trim. Maybe it's warm here instead of the women being covered up in coats so we look get in trouble for looking. Maybe we have more divorce attorneys.............

1. More people marry, allow greater percentage of "mistake/borderline" marriages 2. marriage age is younger; these marriages don't last as long 3. Divorces have little consequences (alimony rarer) 4. fewer catholics (in most areas) ???? |

You'd be floored at the successful number of second marriages around here. Many I know are on their second or third before they start families. Not my thing, but each to his own. I found the best woman in the world the fist time around. : ) |

I would say it has to do with religious/conservative culture based sexual repression, IE sex before marriage. More food for thought, why is the teen pregnancy rate higher in such states? I think we have a trend here.

Probably just a lot less marriages to begin with in super liberal areas. Remember, Vermont is the state with the lowest birth rate in the nation.

It makes sense that the divorce rate would be lower where the marriage rate is lower. You can't get divorced if you never get married. Mass. has the about lowest marriage rate.

Exactly right. When a liberal/pussy man gets married, all he's going to say for the rest of his life is "Yes Dear" He will try very carefully to avoid confrontation for fear that he may say or do something offensive to a woman. This would be just as unimaginable to him as offending any other minority making him a biggot. This is why we see the Femi-nazis along with the rest of the left, try to implement their policy of the pussification of the American male. If they could turn all men into pussies, like liberal men, then in theory we would have no war, no violence, no strip-clubs, no nudity on t.v., no toy guns, no real guns. Etc. ETA: And certainly no one to give them a hard way to go when they want to get an abortion. |

South has a more conservative populace, that when they knock a chick up, they marry her. Such marriages are problematic, and often end in divorce. Other places in the country, they just shack up, or ignore the reality of the child. |

Well no one has done a survey comparing divorce rates and rates of adultry. My Ex was a very good Roman Catholic Girl, when our marriage got shaky the advice from the priest was for me to get out. Yes sorry guys but that is true, Why? I am not a Roman Catholic. If I was she would have been told to make it work.
Also a Priest that I became very good friends with, ttold me that if me having an affair would keep the nmarriage togehter it was ok. Ah no dice....she was a bitch....I left. He also told me that as a priest he would look the other way with adultery as it would keep the marriage together. Simple, now do a survey that reflects life and attitudes. |

Hey, if you want to run away, fine. As for the South being seemingly full of virtuous men who marry women they impregnante, please spare me. I can think of many many couples around here who got married when they found themselves in trouble. I am sure there are just as many Southern couples who opted to cohabitate in spite of the pregnancy. You guys make these assertations and you havve nothing to back it up, it just helps you feel morally superior for some reason. |

Totally crazy and foolish. A year out of high school is a decade too soon. Some people around here get married that young, sure. I don't know manyin that group that last. I suppose if I lived in a part of the country that thumped on its Bible while pontificating about no premarital sex, I'd be rushing to the altar. Guess people down there can't see how foolish that sort of moralistic preaching is. Get them educated on birth control, let them date, mature and find a partner they WANT to be with, instead of forcing them to settle for someone in a rush of hormones so they can morally be allowed to screw in your eyes because they have a piece of paper.............. |
