My mom brought me one back from the beach. Didn't come with any documents. I ploped him in my old fish tank? Anything I should know about him?

Only friend for sure.

I have a sea turtle, lives in a tank from a pet store.  Buy turtle pellets from the pet store, mine eats T-Rex brand turtle pellets.  Clean his tank every few weeks.

Yellow or Red Eared Slider,   what color is the side of his head?

Make sure he has a spot to dry out if he wants to and keep his tank clean,  get the pellets from the pet store for him.

If its a red-eared slider, be careful.

The kids found one in the yard (along with a baby snapper turtle) and brought it in.

I read up on it and the wife (working in a lab) knows to avoid turtles.  They can carry salmonella like someone already said (not something you want to get).  They require a rock to come out on and sunbathe..and if your tank is not in the sun..you need a heat lamp.  Basically the critters come out to dry off and drying off gets rid of the funk that grows on them occasionally.

My best advice...free  willy

Whatever you do, don’t release it anywhere.  These turtles have been introduced many places they shouldn’t be by people who get them and decide not to keep them because either they don’t want to care for them, or they get to big to be cute.  If you decide you don’t want it find a reptile rescue group near you and have them take it, if they don’t already have way to many.

Red Eared slider turtle it looks like. Are his ears red? They need a big deep tank. That is not NEARLY enough water for them. The only piece of land they really need is a dry area to bask in with a UV lamp/light. Goto www.turtletimes.com for more info. I think that's the address. Goto the pet store and buy it some Reptomin turtle pellets/food. They crap a lot and require you to drain the tank once or twice a week and clean the filter. It is not just a pet you can just feed and forget about. You have to keep their tank clean or they'll get sick.

It is illegal to sell a turtle under 4 inches, but I don't think it's illegal to have one.
