Seems some people were alluding to Tim Leatherman or the company in a less then flattering way or blatantly not commenting.

Tim Leatherman was a big Kerry supporter in the last election.  Keep that company on your shit list.

Huge democrat and Kerry supporter.  When some of his customers voiced concerns, he basically told them to fuck off.

Signed off on Kerry support as prez of the company, not a private citizen. When called on it, said "que sera sera"

I have both (the Leatherman, my LAST, purchased well before the '04 election) and both have held up well (the Gerber being over 10 years old)

Why support someone (economically) who would oppose the 2nd?

My Gerbers have taken a serious beating and just keep on working.  Perfectly.  Every time.

I'd still have both if I hadn't stupidly loaned mine out to my roommate's sister for an art project she was working on.  I asked her about it a month later and she could never find it.

She paid up, and I bought a Gerber custom multi-plier, but it isn't the same.  For instance, my original one had special allen screws holding the pliers jaws to the sliding handle slots.  The new one has a nice but less impressive clip system.  Works just as well, I just liked the look of the allen screws better.

Not a problem unless we leave Taiwan in the paddies when the ChiComs come.  A lot of Gerbers stuff has been made overseas for years anyways.

I bought five multitools for Christmas presents last year, all were Gerbers. I have a Leatherman issued to me by Uncle Sam, has the blasting cap crimp feature, when this came out about Kerry after nearly twenty years of using it I carefully oiled it, wrapped it up and haven't touched it since.
Personally I use a Swiss tool now. Have one on my hunting gear, one in my canoe gear, and one with me.

Tim Leatherman replied to one of my emails (canned reply, I'm sure...) basically saying FOAD, he was supporting Kerry and that was that...

I wrote back and told him that he had seen the last purchase order from my department as long as I had anything to say about who we chose for suppliers.

I'll NEVER own another Leatherman as long as I live.

+1 I've had the same Leatherman tool for the past 7 years. It's a great product. Are you going to
stop buying and start throwing away any one of the other bazillion items you have around your
home and office because you don't agree with the political views of the owner? Do you think all of
the hard working employees and craftsmen that work for Leatherman should be punished too.

This is why some of us won't buy Leatherman products:

September 14, 2004
Dear Fellow Americans:
We are business leaders in the outdoor industry and we have come together because we can no longer be silent. Outdoor businesses depend on abundant and available recreation opportunities so our customers can enjoy outdoor activities. In return, outdoor businesses employ over a million Americans, contribute $18 billion to the U.S. economy and work together to promote an active and healthy lifestyle to the 149 million Americans who love the great American outdoors.
In our opinion increasing the number of venues for active outdoor recreation, staunchly protecting the environment, bolstering recreation and conservation funding to our public land agencies and reducing health care costs go hand-in-hand. They are essential for the health and well being of the outdoor industry and its customers
Senators John Kerry and John Edwards share our values and goals. They know that promoting active outdoor recreation promotes good health. They know that proactively protecting and supporting public lands for recreational use means future generations will enjoy them too. They know that improving the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink is not negotiable for any industry or business in America. They know that health care costs will continue to increase unless we are united in reducing obesity in America.
John Kerry and John Edwards are committed to preserving our national parks for the benefit of current and future generations. President Bush has promoted policies that break that commitment and endanger the future sustainability of our national parks. President Bush's policies have severely under-funded our national parks resulting in rampant understaffing, site closures, elimination of visitor education programs and neglected cultural and natural resource preservation, demonstrating indifference towards unsafe trails, unclear facilities and the growing shortage of safety staff.
As importantly, the Bush administration has rolled back basic environmental protections that undermine parks including:
• Rolling back Clean Air Act requirements that ensure visibility and healthy visits to our national parks
• Eliminating federal protections for our public lands that will allow mining, logging and development in national forests;
• Slashing the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which enables the National Park Service to acquire new land and protect and enhance existing parks facilities.
In contrast John Kerry and John Edwards have a plan to protect the scenic landscapes and vistas for the appreciation of future generations through rigorous enforcement of clean air and water regulations and will preserve the resources that embody our cultural heritage through committed funding for parks operations by:
• Increasing the operating budget of the National Park Service by $600 million will put our parks back on the path toward recovery and restoration. We will pay for this important objective by modernizing the sale of mineral rights and using the revenue generated to increase the operating budgets of our national parks.
In contrast John Kerry and John Edwards have a plan to protect the scenic landscapes and vistas for the appreciation of future generations through rigorous enforcement of clean air and water regulations and will preserve the resources that embody our cultural heritage through committed funding for parks operations by:
Therefore, we the undersigned are proud to endorse Senator Kerry as the next President of the United States.

Crackpot statement of the day.

One of my best employees donated $11,500 to the Kerry campaign and helped raise thousands more.
Should I find a reason to fire him because I don't agree with his political views?

Your missing the point.
Did you employee] donate, or did your employee donate on behalf of  the company.
BIG difference.

I dont care what Mr. Leatherman himself does or says. Its when he represents himself as a company rather then as an individual.

Thats the key defining difference. Tell me "Tim Leatherman supports Kerry". Fine, fair nuff. Thats your choice. DONT fucking tell me "Leatherman Tool supports Kerry".

He has his company join the "Sportsmen for Kerry" movement, making it look like lots of outdoorsmen were for Kerry.  He is also planning to outsource most of his knife and tool production to China.
