I have a basic network at home with three computers hooked up. I also have ZoneAlarm on my pc.
How do I keep the other computers from accessing ANYTHING on my PC? What setting should I use? Also, under the "firewall" setting, I clicked "custom" and checked off "allow outgoing DHCP"....what does it do? ...I know...I'm retarded

Turn off sharing and encrypt your HDD, what OS are you running.

You might think about spending a couple of hundred on having a professional come by and do it all correctly. I own one of those businesses, and there is a huge value - as long as you get a firm that has an established reputation and industry recognized technical affiliations and certifications.

If you turn the zone alarm firewall settings to High, that will keep the PC pretty locked down. You won't be able to share and other computers won't be able to see that one on the network. Mine also keeps ping requests from coming back.
Applying encryption to your hard drive will do nothing to stop network traffic to the PC. |

By the way, best wishes to you in getting this the way you want it. XP Home is not very flexible and we often just upgrade to XP PRO.

How are your drives formatted? FAT32 or NTFS?
I ask, did you reformat your drives to NTFS after they were delivered from the factory? If not they are Fat32 and will never be 100% secure. You can buy Norton secure or a bunch of other BS but unless you use it religiously its wasted money. Someone above mentioned encrypting your whole drive, not a bad idea. As long as you're on the internet or an insecure network there is always the risk of compromise... |

Alright
Start Control panel Network connections Click on Local Area Connection There weill be a list in the window that appears, scroll down to File and Printer sharing for Mircosoft Networks, select that Click the button underneth that that says Unistall When asked to confirm, click yes. After you get done with that, it might ask you to restart your computer, if it doesn't do it manually. If you need any more help, tell me. -FOX- |

Start
My Computer Local disk (C:) A buch of files and folder should pop up, this is where it gets interesting. Move your cursor over a file or folder, use your right mouse button to click on it. A small pop-up window will pop up, at the bottom it will say Properties, click on that A new window should pop up, Click on the button that says adavnced. Yet another new window should pop up. At the bottom there should be a check box that says "encrypt contents to secure data", click the check box, a check should apear in it. Click OK It will close that window and bring you back to the one you were at before. In thaqt window, click apply changes. A new window will pop up, It will confirm with you that you want to encrypt the folder, make sure the check box says encypt folder and sub-folders Click ok It may take a few secounds to a few hours to encrypt, epnding on file size and computer speed, but most folders will be instant. The apply button will turn grey, click ok on the left. That should do it, do it to all folders in the (C:) drive. If you need any extra help, tell me. |

Be carefully implementing EFS. Make a spare recovery key so you can get back into your system if you fubar it up. Best is to let someone who has used EFS before help you.

both Pro and Home, both with sp2 although come to think of it, I've only ever tried the encrypting on the desktop that has pro. so with pro I'm positive encrypted turns green on the laptop the compressed files turn blue, but since I just realized I've never encrypted on that one I can't say for sure that home turns green |

+1 just his luck he will encrypt his important stuff on the HD copy it to a cd and never get it back if his HD crashes. unfortunatly that has happened to me |
