Actually it was the Thursday before Labor Day at the local Sam's Club.  Went down the isle that has lawn stuff looking for a new hose and there was the Christmas stuff.  I'm so damn old I remember when the Christmas stuff didn't show until after Thanksgiving.

Wonder what the neighbors will think if I put the outside decorations up this weekend?

No kidding, I can't remember the last year that they(retailers) waited until after Thanksgiving to put out the Christmas stuff. Early 80's, maybe?

One Christmas, when I was in high school, I tied a Christmas tree to the roof of my '63 Valiant.

The strange looks started sometime in March, but nobody fucked with me that school year.
