Since there's so many problems in the world these days I was trying to get my mind off it all and was thinking about some of the simple things in life that bring us joy. Here's my list:
A good range day: 65 degrees, partly cloudy, 0 wind Spending time with good friends Jack Daniels Whiskey Hot Krispy Kreme donuts Good country music on the radio Camping in the middle of nowhere under a starlit sky Big pickup trucks That's all I can think of right now. What do you have? MJD |
that's a good list. Off the top of my head: Passover Coca-Cola the smell of women's hair |
A well sung Hymn
A tender kiss. A gentle breeze in the woods +.9bar on the smell of women's hair |
I get home from work usually about 1am.
Sneaking into the kids rooms and watching them sleep for a minute or two. |
BBQ Ribs
The excited smile on my 2 year old's face when I walk in the door after work. |
Dove hunting with my (now grown) son. Camping up on the northern Kiabab in the summer.
You guys are such romantics!
The smell of coffee, playing cards with my grandfather, my children sleeping, the feeling I have when I have a few bucks in the checking account, groceries in the cupboards and the bills all paid. Patty |
Being the only boat on the middle of the lake at night.
Sitting on the back porch. Sleeping in on Saturday morning. |
some days when you wake up, and you feel like the whole world woke up with you.
Going to the range with your Dad.
Sleeping on the sofa during a thunderstorm. A kudos from the boss for a job well done. |
When I take my granddaughter to the mall and as we are walking around, she holds my hand.
Playing with my son
Hearing my son laugh Playing with my dog Playing with my guns Getting gear in the mail Beer ARFCOM I guess sex with the wife, but that's anything but simple. ETA: A good haircut Looking at the lawn after cutting and trimming it. |
The satisfaction when my aim is true and my handloaded bullet finds it's mark 200 yards downrange. Oh yeah, and an ice cold Coors Light in a mug straight out of the ice box.
getting into a chilly swimming pool after mowing the lawn.
and a huge +1 on whoever said the smell of a womans hair edit to add eating a MRE with out being shot at. |
Watching my kids play sports.
Saturday morning snuggle with my daughter. My yellow lab retrieving a bird. Surprising my wife with flowers. Sitting in my recliner watching TV. |

Standing on a dock, fishing when there's not a single sound across the whole lake and the water's utterly smooth.
Sitting on the back porch looking out across 30+ acres and knowing it's all yours. |

Cleaning guns with my four year old. When we're done, she says, "Daddy, you need more pistols. Like sixty forty more pistols so we can keep cleaning them together."

I think my biggest simple pleasure is being high up and looking out over a valley or onto other peaks in the distance. For me, it is like a puzzle in that the longer you stare the more details you pick out....putting the whole picture together, so to speak. It gets even more interesting if you have a decent set of optics with you so you can tell what that little speck out in the distance is.
Well cleaned guns and the overpowering smell of Hoppes fumes in my basement.
the smile and laugh of my wife
Cool fall Rainy day and a Nap Jumping in to a warm bed in the middle of winter.... out door bonfire with friends Cooking steaks on the grill being on the lake first thing in the morning and the water is like glass....and hearing mother nature wake up... puppy breath and them biting your ears childs laugh |

Little warm puppies, children, and girls of the night. Just Kidding.
Holding my girlfriend as we listen to the rain.
The view of the world at 6k feet above sea level. The smell of gunpowder. Seeing old freeby wave her stars and stripes. |
The sound of the wind in the woods.
The smell of fresh bread baking. The daily greeting I get from my dog whenever I come home. My gf's head nestled on my shoulder. |
Monday evenings after work I have 1950's day.
I come home from work, sit down, my GF takes off my shoes, gets me a drink of my choice, rubs my feet, and lets me unwinde. And she does it without saying a word. |

There are so many, here goes a few:
The first chilly fall morning when you can smell the frost in the the air. A warm campfire and good company on a chilly night. the perfect sight picture and trigger break, you know its an X ring before the spotter does. The look on my 10 yr old's face when he knocks down 2 pepper poppers in 3 seconds A dive into the swimming pool on a stinking hot day. My wife's smile when I make her favorite meals. Chicken fried pork chops, and hominy. Ops |
is that what you meant |
Watching the sprinklers in the evening, after mowing the lawn...
Also, I find blowing up small vermin with grossly overbore rifles to be extremely soothing on a more basic level. |
Watching my 4 sons playing together
listening to the first RECORD that I bought {being played to me by my 12 y/o son on his new cd player- his first cd was the same as my first record...london calling from the clash} my wifes fingers on my back while just laying on the couch spooning said wife watching my dog play with something by himself 20 yrds out THE SMELL OF A NOMEX LINNED HELMET The crackle of a full race motor coming to life! a 2-stoke mx motor firing up on the first kick watching my eldest son knock down targets faster than I can..with my RIFLE watching my youngest outride the rest of us |
There are too many to list
Here is three of my favorites But the smell of a late October Northern Minnesota morning, those mornings where you can smell the leaves and dew. The View you see out on the western prairie of North Dakota The sounds of a waterfall, it actually drowns out the ringing in my ears |
Sitting on the porch during a thunderstorm
A back-scratch A cold Coke on a hot summer day A cold bottle of Yungeling with friends An empty outdoor range with a nice overcast sky Smell of women's hair Laying in a cozy bed in the dead of winter with your significant other |
Fireflies.
Watching birds bathe in puddles. They're so funny lookin! A really cold day when snow's in the air and you can smell wood smoke from the chimneys around. The smells of Christmas baking. Ginger and vanilla and nutmeg, oh my! Waking up to dawn as the coyotes howl their last. Winning a poker hand and surprising everyone, including yourself. Being on a hilltop and watching a big storm roll in. |
Hitting a six inch target from 600 yard away. (There aren't any 1,000 yard ranges around here.)
Sleeping and having a nice dream. |
"To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women."
The quiet before the first crack of dawn when you're awake and you won't have anything pressing to do for several hours at least. The incredible sense of total peace and well-being that comes after concluding a romantic encounter with someone you deeply love. The clean, fresh smell of the air and the entire world after a thunderstorm. A gentle rain on a quiet day. Having the entire beach to yourself at sunset. Coming home after a hard day's work, and your dog at least greets you with total love and affection and doesn't want a piece of you....even though SOMEBODY else in the house is SURE to get on your ass IMMEDIATELY no matter how much you beg them to NOT do that for at least half an hour. Only my dog can be counted on to greet me like that. Sitting down in my home theater, firing up the equipment, and settling down to watch a new movie I've never seen before, on equipment that's absolutely first rate and represents a total cost (new price) of $75,000 or so. (OK, that may not be a SIMPLE simple pleasure, except that it is when you get to the movie and stop obsessing over your lovely expensive toys. ) Having the good results of your labors noticed...quite unexpectedly. Having lunch or dinner with friends and family. Having a good friend drop by for a visit, unexpectedly but at a good time. Receiving favorable attention from an attractive stranger of the opposite sex, at a time and a place where it causes no problems for you. It's very nice to be thought of as attractive. Going way out on a limb and giving your opinion or decision....and it works out well. Asking a new person for a date...and the answer is "Yes!" , delivered without hesitation and with a smile. When my GF gives me a hug and a massage simply because she wants to and senses that it's the right thing for me at the time. Sometimes, it's just a matter of being left totally alone at the right time. Making something wonderful with your hands. In my case, that would be musical instruments...guitars. Particularly when it's completed and ready to play for the first time. Flying an airplane on a very clear day in perfect weather. The world is so beautiful when seen from above. CJ |
