Subject: Mad at High Gas Prices
I hear we are going to hit close to $4.00 a gallon by summer's end.
Want gasoline prices to come down?  We need to take some intelligent, united action.

Here's a good idea, which makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $2.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $3.29 for regular unleaded in my town.
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $2.50-$2.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace.... not sellers.

The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas!  And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea:
For the rest of this year, DON"T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.  But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp (sic) out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers!  If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people and DON"T purchase
ANY gasoline from EXXON and MOBIL.   That's all.  How long would all
that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you!

Acting together we can make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.
PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK

Okay, since you asked.

The price of gasoline is controlled by two main factors: Supply and demand. You may have heard of these. The only reliable way to lower the price is the either A) Increase supply, or B) decrease demand.

The email suggestion will do neither. It would merely shift demand in the market from one supplier to another.

As someone who was smart enough to benefit from high energy prices (by buying stock in XOM, etc.) please don't forward the email.

I'm really just trying to point out that the "big oil companies" that "get rich" and "reap huge profits" are publically owned companies and the dividends and per share price increase builds wealth for millions of Americans.

Yes.  Conserve fuel when you can, and decrease demand.  Demand is down 4% since Katrina.

Actually, I have two, both of which will drive the price of gas down.

1) Build more refineries.
2) Use less gas.

That will impact both the supply and the demand sides of the supply-demand curve.

Sometimes "just doing something" is a total waste of time.

Sure. Decrease demand over a sustained period of time, while encouraging legislators to remove roadblocks hampering the supply.

If the entire country refused to buy gas from Exxon and Mobil, the demand for gas from other suppliers would exceed the supply. They would have to raise their prices to keep from running out of gas on a regular basis.

This ridiculous scheme would raise prices, not lower them. Buy a motorcycle, or something.

you do know that we aren't the only country that uses oil or gas.  there is always going to be a high demand for oil, and gas.....if it ain't here, then somewhere else. you keep forgetting that this is a world economy, in order for the price of gas to go down, that means that everybody on the planet would have to cut down on gas.

What a silly comparison. The AWB was a law. It had NOTHING to do with the economics of supply and demand. Positive law is very influenced by opinions and letter writing campaigns. Prices in a free market are not.

I does not require a 100% increase in demand to incur a 100% increase in price. It is painfully obvious you have never even take and introductory economics class. You might want to give this book a read.

I don't think it would raise prices.  They'd just buy gas from Exxon or Mobil since those two companies would have an excess.

The real problem with this theory is that gas is a commodity.  Shifting demand from one commodity supplier to another doesn't significantly affect the price.z

That's funny. You some how extrapolate that because people don't want to buy into 5th grade "economics" that it somehow translates into us being totally inactive in trying to get the AWB to expire

WTF? You have no idea what I or anyone else here did to help the AWB to expire. Making assumptions, as the old saying goes, only makes an ass out of u and me.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not happy in the least about gas prices being so high, but these silly Internet rumors aren't where you should be directing your action. All you're doing is spinning your tires. If you want to do something about it fine. Figure out a way to use less gas. If everyone did that, demand would go down and price would go down. Simple. But I fear that getting everyone to use less gas is about as easy as getting anyone to follow one of these silly Internet rumors.

Worldwide demand for crude oil has soared in the past few years, as China has increased their demand enormously.  This is what has been driving up crude oil prices, because it has increased overall demand.

U.S. demand has gradually increased (we use an very large proportion of the worlds supply) but our refinining capacity has NOT increased along with our demand.  This restricts our supply of refined products.

I think these oil e-mails are written by other oil company execs. Screw the competition through a grassroots method.

The oil companies are going to need profits to rebuild their self-insured gulf coast platforms.

But I am doing my part by driving less, and using high mileage cars more often.

God bless your soul dude i think your the first person with a positive edifying comment

I have started driving less also but that also keeps me from spending my money at eaterys and movie houses I think soo it will follow that those places wil lfeel the gas prices first.

Don't get pissy with us because you posted a dumbass idea...

Notice how quickly it turned into a whiny tirade, like a small child furiously waving his impotent fists at the internet, because everyone didn't immediately swallow his complete bullshit.

Sorry, but where the hell are you coming up with this crap?

Care to explain how you know that nobody here is taking any action to help reduce gas prices? Talk about assumption.

The difference between what I am doing and what you're proposing is that I'm actually making intelligent choices as to what action I take in order to help reduce gas prices.

What you're asking here is that people not think at all. Just do random shit until gas prices start falling .

I still fail to see how you are even coming to some of the conclusions about us that you are. Because we KNOW that a silly Internet rumor isn't true and WON'T WORK, now suddenly we're just lazy asses sitting around doing nothing to reduce gas prices or to protect the 2nd amenmdment? Maybe, just maybe we're actually doing things that WORK rather than wasting our time with silly Internet rumors.

PAEBR332 had some good ideas. Those are some of the kinds of things that I am doing myself. Why don't you try those?
