Seems the Phrench want a carrier that workds this time!
 Andy Anglo-French tie-up talks to build aircraft carriers Dominic O’Connell FRENCH shipbuilding firms are working with their British counterparts on plans to co- operate on a new generation of aircraft carriers. Jean-Marie Poimboeuf, chief executive of DCN, the state-owned naval systems group, said a report on a joint industrial strategy to build three carriers would go to the two governments at the end of the month. Poimboeuf was speaking ahead of DSEI, the defence exhibition in London’s Docklands, which starts in 10 days’ time. Unofficial talks between the companies involved, which include BAE Systems, VT Group, Thales and DCN, are expected to take place at the show. The Ministry of Defence plans to build two new carriers for the Royal Navy at a cost of about £3.6 billion. They are scheduled to enter service in 2012 and 2015. The French want one new carrier to supplement the nuclear-powered Charles de Gaulle. DCN and Thales have created a joint venture — called MOPA2 — to build the new vessel. Poimboeuf said it had been asked to study the British aircraft-carrier design to see if it would suit French requirements. “Our conclusion is that the British design is compatible with the operational needs of the French navy. “If the French government chooses the design, we will use it, and just do some small changes,” he said. The two governments have now asked the companies involved in both programmes to draw up a joint industrial plan for the construction of three ships to work out what cost savings could be achieved. An Anglo-French carrier programme would prove controversial, with possible opposition on both sides of the Channel. British defence industry sources said there were also concerns that French involvement could delay the British programme, which is in advanced talks. DCN already supplies several British programmes, and is involved in building components and systems for the Royal Navy’s new Type 45 frigates and Astute submarines. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2095-1763561,00.html   The latest 'delta' design… the only issue now is ski jump or cats… the RN/RAF are considering buying the CTOL F-35 instead of the STOVL F-35 now due to delays and reduced capability of the STOVL version. Nelson ->  … I suppose having been beaten in every naval battle they fought with us for the last 300 years they want to buy into the 'winning side' for a change.  We do use a lot of Phrench equipment in the Navy though… Sonars, ASTER missiles, STorm Shadow cruise missiles. The Phrench GIAT 155 naval gun system is a front runner for the Royal Navy's future gun requirement. |

I say stay with the STOLV version of the F-35. That'll really screw with the Phrench.

I don't see a trap on that carrier. Will they ditch all aircraft with damaged or malfunctioning vertical-flight systems?

'Officially' they are STOVL carriers, but they are to be fitted 'for but not with' cats and arrestor gear. The 'Ski Jump' is designed as a seperate structure that can be removed without disturbing the shipboard systems at a later date to fit cats. Many people in the Navy think that the 'Ski jump' will get ditched and they will be built with cats and wires now the Phrnch are involved. The Phrench version would have them, it was costed out at under $100 million per ship to fit them to the two Royal Navy ones.. Andy |

Iraq is not the center of the world. The Charles de Gaulle was used in A-stan. The previous ones were used in liban, iraq (91), bosnia, kosovo... |

It allows you to lauch a heavy aircraft without a catapult, the russians use them to launch SU-33's and MIG-29's off their carrier. Basically the plane runs off into a ballistic trajectory and flys out rather than is thrown off the front. The reason the Royal Navy want's cats is so they can cross-deck with the French and US Navy carriers. Andy |

Navy Guys correct me...
With US carriers, we have 2 decks. The cat, and the off-center landing deck. With the Ski Jump, you get 1 deck for normal STOL/VTOL operations, and no deck for normal SuperBug A-6 type aircraft. |

The design is 'adaptable' the cat and arrestor gear trunking and structure is being designed in while they make their minds up wether to CTOL or STOVL… if they go CTOL the deck will look like this……  Andy |
