We can see the results all the way from the corner thief/drug addict up to the head of Enron. The problem is the same- the belief that there is no right or wrong, and that I am not accountable or responsible for my actions. The "welfare state" mentality goes along with the amoral mentality. "I am not responsible for myself"- this means both my actions and caring for myself. If I do wrong, it is someone else's fault, if I am not cared for it is someone elses fault. Our society has become dependent on external controls in order to exist. If people think they can get away with anything without being caught or penalized, they will try. The city of NO is now ruled by a group of people who have no internal controls, and have also been freed from their external controls. The only thing that will improve the situation in the short term is reestablishment of those external threats of punishment.

The root issue is not welfare, it is personal responsibility and morality. Those that we see in the anarchy of NOLA have neither, by their own choice. This type of person has always existed. The problem is that it used to be that these sort of folk didn't last very long. They wised up, or starved, or got killed or executed. The system saw to it that they were encouraged to change or leave.

Now the system not only props them up, it allows them to flourish and spread their philosophical mind rot to their offspring.

Removing the welfare system is only the first step in the re-education of these folks.

All due respect, you're the one who doesn't understand. The difference between Switzerland and the public housing projects of an inner American city could hardly be more different and extreme.

I agree. It's not just learned helplessness. Even high income people here would sit and cry if they couldn't flee. It's thug culture, combined with shouting down anyone who calls it out as racist on top of sense of entitlement. It's wrong is right morals or lack there of. That's the difference. See from day one they are wrapped in a culture that tells them to hate everyone with more than them. To show no respect to authority because that makes them a bitch. Kindness is weakness. Do unto others before they get over on you. We tolerate it and our media worships it.

I'll bet that is not the case in Switzerland.

What I am saying is that it's not Welfare per se that is the problem, it's the mindset of the people on welfare.

As Grunteled put it so rightly, it's the 'Thug Culture'. We have plenty of deprived people here in Britain in social housing, but its those with the 'Thug Culture' that are the problem… and those people with the 'Thug Culture' are the same as yours, predominantly people of 'color' (to avoid the wrath of the staff!).

Your right, Switzerland does not have that problem… vast Welfare State but no 'Thug Culture' equals no looting and rioting.

You may be right Andy about chasing our tail. My agreement was based on the fact that social welfare combined with the PC "anything they want to do must be tolerated as thier 'culture'" mentality is issue here. The spreading culture of the American ghetto is as alien as plutonians would be to the Swiss. The slums in the US are a rot that is eating us from the inside. The proposed solution is always to increase the handouts. NOTHING AT ALL is expected or demanded in return. On and on it goes.

You owe your family's success to your parents(you of course know and appreciate this). They have instilled a great sense of drive into you which you have passed down. It is a strong family with good values that has been and hopefully will continue to be the strength of this country and society. This is the foundation that carries on for generations. Nowadays the importance of the family unit has been eroded thru the media making single life and single parenting more fashionable, and the need for the family forgotten due to welfare. This is beyond a race issue. It affects everyone and it is growing like a cancer.

I agree. It used to be that being lazy or stupid also tended to be fatal. Now, with our "social safety net", a man can live an awfully long time being stupid and/or lazy.

I've long left High School and my analysis is based on living within these European Welfare Systems.

Even though me and Mrs Vito have a combined income of $70,000pa we still qualify for benefits. I get @ $700 a month back from the system.

Although it is indeed socially unnacceptable to exploit the programs in Switzerland, people can and do. The 'Welfare System' in Europe is based on a the concept of giving people a 'leg up' in life, not on paying enough to survive.

Because it is quite generous it stops you falling back down the ladder if life shits on you or you lose your job, and if you are at the bottom it helps you to climb up if you want to.

People who govern their lives by principle will always behave properly. Because they govern themselves, they have no need to be governed.

Those without principle must be governed. When that is not there, they will no longer be restrained from doing evil.

Many of the founding fathers stated in no uncertain terms that the American society they were creating had to be a MORAL society, else freedom will fail.

What we are seeing in NO is just how right they were. Thus when we fail to instill moral principle into our citizens, we have already doomed our Republic to destruction.

Welfare itself is but a contributing factor. It is the complete erosion of actual moral values that is responsible for the idiocy we have witnessed in NO.

While there's some truth to Tracinski's article, I think it's very unfair to characterize the citizens of N.O. who ended up trapped inside the city as all welfare cases or criminals. I don't buy that.
I see it as simply a classic case of "Blue State" mentality.
Too many folks in N.O. have bought into the Liberal philsophy that says that government will solve all problems and will immediately come to the rescue in any time of need. Unrealistic expectations have been created by this dysfunctional philosophy.
Many of the people who ended up being trapped are not welfare cases nor criminals, they're just typical urban liberals.
Katrina has exposed the perils of abandoning the concept of personal responsibility.
