A good friend just got a new rifle.....30-06 caliber, precision type rifle.

it is is first gun.

What is a good general purpose cleaning kit that I could get him for his birthday?

I got boxes of the stuff lying around, haven't purchased any supplies in a good long while and really dont know what is available today

Don't need kits. AR is self cleaning.

a Hoppes 30 cal cleaning kit at walmart.

you don't need anything fancy to clean your gun.

take for example wipping your ass. can you get the job done with single ply?

charmin double ply might be nicer, but your cleaning a rifle here.... you don't need a copper wire lead scrapper in you're ass. but your gun will handle it.

You are right.  I have proof.   When I got issued my first M-16 they didn't give us any cleaning kits.  Said we didn't need them.  If an AR needed a cleaning kit the Army would have suppied us with one in 1967.

Aluminum or fiberglass rod to keep from scratching the barrel.

Which is not true, but he is asking about a 30-06 precision rifle.  Nice reading skills there.

Get a bore snake for 30 cal rifles, excellent tool.
Chamber brush.
Bore solvent.
Gun oil.
Rags.
Q-tips.
Barber brush (for getting dust and dirt out of nooks and crannies).

Screw the kit.

Get a Tipton or MTM gun vise.

Get a Bore Tech Bore Stix or Dewey one piece coated rod, wrap-around jags, and patches.

Get a bore guide (Stoney Point is good), Shooter's Choice solvent and CLP.

Maybe a silicon rag to wipe down the outside of the gun.

If you need grease, Tetra grease is good.

.30-06 is too long for AR-15s
