San Francisco homeless numbers plummet


Despite intense, sometimes hysterical criticism of his alleged heartlessness, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom ended direct cash grants to homeless people. Instead, specific services, such as housing, were purchased and provided to ligitimate claimants. In other words, no more free money.

The numbers show the

number of people on general assistance in San Francisco has shrunk from 2,497 to 545 -- a reduction of 80 percent.

San Francisco Chronicle ace reporters Matier & Ross report that one reason is that the city doesn't hesitate to buy one way bus tickets, sendking indigent newcomers wherever they have someone who can take them.

"Now, we just make a call to make sure they have someone to go back to,'' said Trent Rhorer, head of the city Department of Human Services."

If they do, then we send them out that afternoon.

"They get a ticket to New York or wherever they're going, money for meals and an escort down to the bus station,'' Rhorer said.

There haven't been a lot of returns.

So a tough-minded policy of eliminating a cash incentive to attract shiftless people from all over actually works. Don't expect to read very much about this. It makes too much sense and reinforces conservative wisdom.

Sweet, less homeless guys.. but I have yet to see a drop in mexicans and hippies peddling for drug money money for some food for their starving children.

I still ahve to step over them on the sidewalk, everyday. I still find them sleeping on the commuter trains in the early mornings(usually with "soiled" clothes )

Before the Olympics came to Atlanta in 1996, the city bought the bums one way bus tickets.  

It was nice not having those assholes hassling everyone for money for drugs.

They came back after the Olympics left town.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I read the city of San Francisco gave CASH to the homeless.  It was intended to help them get on their feet and make sure they didn't go hungry.

Then they wondered why the homeless problem kept getting worse and worse

This disease could spread...if we're lucky.

They should be given one way tickets to Tijuana. We have been taking and taking and we need to give something back to Mexico for all the fine people they have sent us.

So THAT explains all the homeless I run into with criminal records out of Cali. Of course, they won't extradite.

I have one guy wanted for HOMICIDE in Cali and they won't come and pick him up.

It's kinda weird, the homeless numbers decrease and the chinese restaurants increase....

There are still plenty around. Whenever I'm at Moscone for a conference walking the streets at 11 PM is disturbing. I really, really want a concealed permit then. Actucally, I want a slung AR and maybe a battery of 155's on call. It's pretty much wall to wall bums, druggies, and prostitutes on Market and the Tenderloin.
