Curious, I went and filled up my tank today....(it holds 45 gallons). How much does diesel weigh per gallon? I know water is about 8 1/2 lbs a gallon, not sure about diesel but my guess is that it's heavier due to the additives and whatnot.

1 pint of water = 1 pound.

how do you get 8.5, when a gallon's 8 pints?

Jet fuel is 6.7 pounds per gallon so diesel should be close.

45 gallons of diesel fuel will weigh about 328 pounds. Depending on the season.

Diesel will weigh between 7 and 7.3 pounds per gallon.

The specific gravity of diesel is very close to that of water (1.0).

(Goggled at .80 to 1.08)

So, 8.5 X 45 = 382.5 pounds.

We just use 8 lbs per gallon -gas, diesel, or water- for rough estimates. We know it's going to be close but not exact, it does however give us a quick number to work with.

I have close to 400 pounds in my trunk! Dang.

Makes me wonder about the driving weight of my car...
