Is Nasa just being overly cautious with this mission or are there really major problems going on here?

NASA has always been cautious about the weather when it comes time for the shuttle to land.  Remember the pilot only has one shot to land the thing and doesn't need to have to deal with bad weather and a rain slick runway.  Also from what I understand the tiles on it can be damaged by flying though rain, this is not a safety hazard but is expensive to repair.

I got to watch two shuttle landing while I was stationed at Edwards and they are very cool to see.

NASA decides upon Edwards AFB, CA

As far as I can remember, the shuttle usually always landed at Edwards AFB and took off from Cape Canaveral.

Nope, they try to land at the Cape whenever possible, it cost a million bucks to ferry the shuttle from Edwards back to Florida.

Should've been a double boom. First time i heard it it scared the shit out of me! Her original flight path into KSC would've taken her right over my apartment.

Either way, i'm glad she's home safe.

It was a very distinctive, slow double boom. Passed right overhead here and landed just a few miles from where I was this morning.

Glad OV-103 and the crew are home safe, another perfect landing.
