I have heard many people refer to the SPR as a special purpose rifle. However I thought that the original name for this unit was special purpose receiver. When I first heard about the project it was part of a SOPMOD kit that utilized different receivers that could be used for mission specific goals.  Was the SPR part of the same program that included the CQBR or close quarters battle receiver?

That's right.  The first one.

What happened to its original name.  It was known as special purpose receiver and was part of a receiver package that included the CQBR? I know it was called that.  I first caught wind of it when both upper receivers were part of a CRANE development project.
