I remember Tom & Jerry comics were very popular in Yugoslavia in the 70's and 80's.

Russia's newspaper, Pravada, used to run Snoopy comics.  Somehow, the editors did not feel it was necessary to pay royalities to Charles Schulz.  
Schulz, in good humor, commented that it was better to be stolen than deemed not worth stealing..or something to that effect.
