I've seen them up close in museums.  When you see them in person, they are much bigger than you would think.

A big plane.  And a great one.

I have a book that tells of a Marine pilot who chased a Japanese bomber to a high altitude.  It was so cold up there the guns froze.

The Jarhead bumped his throttle up and began closing in on the bomber.  He could see the Japanese tailgunner frantically beating his frozen gun.

The Marine proceeded to chew the tail control surfaces off the Japanese plane with that 13-foot diameter prop.  The bomber went out of control, and the Marine RTB and received credit for a kill.  There's a picture of him standing in front of his airplane with the damaged prop.

Tough bird.

F4U-5NL is a winterized, night fighter version of the F4U.

I thought it was an F4U-1C, because of the 20mm cannons in the wing, it has 4.

There should be a radar housing on the left RIGHT wing outboard of the guns, on the F4U-5NL.

What was I thinkin'?
