"C" model?
Vought F4U-5NL Corsair 124692 to Honduras AF as FAH-607. Returned to USA under civilian ownership in 1979. To Collings Foundation 1988 and rebuilt 1988-1997. Registered as N45NL Jan 6, 1997. Ditched off New Smyrna Beach, FL Mar 4, 1997 after engine failure; recovered after 2 weeks underwater and allegedly to be rebuilt. I've seen them up close in museums. When you see them in person, they are much bigger than you would think.
A big plane. And a great one.

I have a book that tells of a Marine pilot who chased a Japanese bomber to a high altitude. It was so cold up there the guns froze.
The Jarhead bumped his throttle up and began closing in on the bomber. He could see the Japanese tailgunner frantically beating his frozen gun. The Marine proceeded to chew the tail control surfaces off the Japanese plane with that 13-foot diameter prop. The bomber went out of control, and the Marine RTB and received credit for a kill. There's a picture of him standing in front of his airplane with the damaged prop. Tough bird. |

F4U-5NL is a winterized, night fighter version of the F4U. I thought it was an F4U-1C, because of the 20mm cannons in the wing, it has 4. There should be a radar housing on the What was I thinkin'? |
