Imagine that.    

The rift between the ruling class and the basic Saudi citizen is beyond the comprehension of most.  Saudi Arabia, thanks to oil wealth, can support a much larger population than it has a need for.  Unemploymment is rampant because outside of the oilfield labor, little can be had for employment.   And most jobs are held by foreigners held in indentured servirtude just shy of slavery.

Welfare, affordable by the oil wealth of the government, allows such a high population density of chronically unemployed as the current kingdom.  This is the breeding ground of anarchy.  But sedition in the kingdom is punished by death so the focus of anger becomes external.

Keep in mind, it is nearly impossible for Saudi Arabia to maintain internal diplomacy with the seat of Islam while doing the same with the international market that has funded its wealth.  Islam would cease to exist if they overthrew the current government.

Saudi Arabia the kernel of evil, Pentagon warned

A briefing given last month to senior Pentagon figures described Saudi Arabia as an enemy of the United States and urged US officials give it an ultimatum to stop backing terrorism or face the seizure of its oil fields and its financial assets in the US.

"The Saudis are active at every level of the terror chain, from planners to financiers, from cadre to foot-soldier, from ideologist to cheerleader," said the briefing presented to the Defence Policy Board on July 10.

"Saudi Arabia supports our enemies and attacks our allies," said the briefing, which was prepared by Laurent Murawiec, a Rand Corporation analyst. Another point described Saudi Arabia as "the kernel of evil, the prime mover, the most dangerous opponent" in the Middle East.

Though the briefing runs counter to the present stance of the US Government, it represents a view that has growing currency within the Bush Administration - especially on the staff of Vice-President Dick Cheney, in the Pentagon's civilian leadership.

One administration official said government views on Saudi Arabia were changing rapidly. "People used to rationalise Saudi behaviour," he said. "You don't hear that any more. There's no doubt that people are recognising reality and recognising that Saudi Arabia is a problem."

The decision to bring the anti-Saudi analysis before the Defence Policy Board also appears tied to the growing debate over whether to launch a US military attack to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq.

The chairman of the board is former Pentagon official Richard Perle, one of the most prominent advocates in Washington of such an invasion.

The briefing argued that removing Saddam would spur change in Saudi Arabia - which it maintained was the larger problem because it financed radical Islamic movements.

"Neither the presentations nor the Defence Policy Board members' comments reflect the official views of the Department of Defense," the Pentagon spokeswoman, Victoria Clarke, said in a statement issued on Monday night. "Saudi Arabia is a long-standing friend and ally of the United States. The Saudis co-operate fully in the global war on terrorism and have the department's and the Administration's deep appreciation."

Mr Murawiec said in his briefing that the US should call on the Saudi authorities to stop all anti-US and anti-Israeli statements in the country, and "prosecute or isolate those involved in the terror chain, including in the Saudi intelligence services".

If the Saudis refused to comply, Saudi oil fields and overseas financial assets should be "targeted".

The report concludes by linking the change of regime in Iraq to altering Saudi behaviour. This is predicated on the belief that once a US invasion has removed Saddam Hussein, a friendly successor regime would become a big exporter of oil to the West. That would diminish US dependence on Saudi energy exports.

Asked for his reaction, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, the Saudi ambassador to the US, said he did not take the briefing seriously. "I think that it is a misguided effort that is shallow, and not honest about the facts," he said. "Repeating lies will never make them facts."
