I use the windows firewall.
I use no AV, and no other firewall. Why? *dons flame suit* Because I am the AV... I dont't put my PC into a position of getting one. I've been running PCs for almost a decade, no virus yet. *knocks on wood* |

I don't open any stupid ass attachments from people mostly. And hotmail has its own VP system that scans any file that goes through it. I run a AV scan every couple months, just to see if I have been an idiot for not having one.. no problems. +, I find that the program uses too many system resources.. my parents have it on their PC, and its sluggish. |

If you are in the military or work for them, you can put NAV and F/W on your personal computer for free. And it never expires. Free updates forever!

Not anymore. It leaves a line in the registry. You have to delete that line after uninstall. There are solutions. None of them legal (i.e. cracks). |

It used to be a little common sense would keep your PC safe. These days, worms and virii are more sophisticated. You don't have to click on an attachment or visit a questionable site to be infected. You can hide a virus in a jpeg if you know how to do it. If you're on the internet, you're at risk, especially with Windoze. The old ways don't work like they used too. And the XP firewall does not block outgoing connections. If a trojan makes it's way to your computer, it'll call home and you'll never know. |

Also run AdAware and periodically use Panda and MicroTrends online AntiVirus. |

Had Norton AV subscription ran out. Tried Zone Alarm hayed it. Using McAfee secirity cednter not trilled with tha either but will use it till subscription runs out. I never open attachments either but a virus or something got in my old computer ( I wasn't running any AV on it & no one else uses my 'puter

You should be running two anti-virus programs, Spybot, Adaware, a softeware firewall and a hardware firewall, Microsoft's Anti-Spyware, another type of spy sweeper program and use Firefox.
No one type of program can stop 100 percent of the crap out there on the internet. |

Clam AV seems to work okay. I was running in on a very fast dual process machine so I can't say how perfomance is on slower hardware. www.clamav.net/

I have used panda it works very well... After installing all the protection, firewall, spyware, etc it uses alot of memory, so if you have 256MB or less i would go will something else. Or disable some features firewall mainly, and it will run better. of course this is coming from someone who has at least 1GB in Ram in all my computers except my laptop.

Personally I hate all programs that are written
to make up for lack of puter sense . It really isn't that hard to keep your OS clean and tight . A decent firewall and some common sense will defeat 99% threats . The other 1% are there to keep you from getting complacent with your security . As usual , this IMHO & YMMV

That's correct, I've done it before, however after a certain point it will not give you updates beyond it. For example: If you uninstall, then reinstall Norton '03, it will begin it's one year subscription all over again from the new date of installation(or reinstallation if you will). However, it will only give you virus definition updates for about a year and perhaps a few months beyond, using the build code as a staring point. They do this because they know that new computers sometimes have Norton Pre-installed, and they give you a small benefit in the way of time to allow for computer sales, but a new PC with a two year old version of Norton would only get the same updates as a two year old computer with the same  And when you reinstall Norton after a subscription expires, they don't know it's not a new computer so in order to keep the $$ rolling in there is a time limit on updates, they prefer that you renew your subscription by buying the newest version. That's why I run Firefox browser, use Adaware SE, Spybot Search and Desytroy(for stuff AAW SE misses) for spyware elimination, and once in a while I get a free virus scan at Housecall. All of these are free programs and they all work very well. I think Firefox Browser in place of IE, or Netscape etc is the key here. I haven't found spyware on my system in a long time, mainly due to Firefox. Viruses are a problem when you use P2P sharing, too many bogus downloads out there, many of them were added by software manufacturers to teach you a lesson when ou try to pirate thier stuff. I haven't had a computer virus in about two years on this computer, but as others said, I don't open anything I am not absolutely sure about. |

AVG from Grisoft is free and it is top of the line.
 Sygate Personal Firewall is a top rated free firewall. (I didn't like Zone Alarm but it is top rated also.) A few Spyware, Adware and Malware tools just in case. Ad-Aware SE Ad-Aware VX2 Cleaner Plug-In CCleaner Spybot S&D CWShredder HiJack This You will not realize how valuable these things can be until you need them! erm, running 2 AV products is a very bad idea... I don't know of any AV vendor that will support their product if another vendor's is there. |

I have run two anti-virus programs for the past 4 years with no problems.
NAV and AVG for almost two years with no problems. Before that I ran NAV and Trend Micro PC-illin with no problems. As I have said, sometimes one catches something the other misses, sometimes they both catch it. I am only worried about the items that both miss. I can get better program support for just about ANYTHING using common sense and Google.

Zone Alarm firewall, either the free or the pro (paid) versions work well.
AVG is good, and also free. Dont use internet exploder or outbreak express. Add spybot or adaware to suppress the crapware. |

my recommendations
zone alarm for firewall. simple and easy to use. windows firewall and the various integration of security and firewall within windows itself is just plain confusing. i use mcaffee managed virusscan for virus. simple and easy and it keeps itself up to date and stays out of your way. as to the guy who says he's his own AV.. I say otay.. you have just been lucky. i build and configure new pcs all the time. workstations, laptops and servers. once built, my pcs do not get viruses. however, as an example, on more than 1 occassion, i have had a pc get infected while i was setting it up. right after installlation of the OS and before installation of service packs, it would get infected buy something on the net. i could have prevented this buy installing everything before putting them on the net but as soon as i get the OS installed i go to MS and start dling patches and service packs. so if you dont run AV/firewall and you dont have probs you are either extremely lucky or dont connect to the internet very often if a at all. some other recommendations.. run a simple email program like eudora that doesn't execute email attachements (like outlook). dont open attachements unless you are waiting for a specific attachement. set up your browser so it doesn't auto install or run anything automatically. |
