My wife is about to start vacuuming. She warned me because she knows I find the noise intolerable. I will be vacating the area until she's done. Anyone else here share my loathing for that sound?

+1

My wife tried to clean him once with the hose attachments and it didn't go over too well. Now he just gets up and leaves the room.

I've never quite understood WHY they fear it - over the last 10-12 years they've gotten used to thunderstorms which used to frighten them, but they are still terrified of the vacuum - but you'd think they'd eventually figure out that it doesn't hurt them.

My cats are morons.

His Achilles Heel.  We use it to round ours up for caging and transport.  Resistance is futile.

I hated that sound as a child.  Now I tolerate it.  But fireworks....

Most cats are morons.  Most dogs are morons too.  In my lifetime I/my family has had six dogs.  NONE of them, despite having a few smart ones, ever figured out that the vacuum was not a monster.  Most of them were afraid of it, a few would attack it.  My German Shepherd attacks the vacuum, and when you yell at her not to she'll just give you a look that says "I'm sorry.  I can't help it, I'm crazy."  The only other machine that can inspire the level of deep down gut reaction in them is the pickup truck, and that's in entirely the opposite vein from the vac.

My rottweiler hates that noise. He's broken the vacuum before when he attacked it.

My cat hisses at it and sometimes attacks the vacuum.

I had to get rid of the dustbuster because he would attack is unceasingly, swatting and hissing.  I would try to keep it away from him and he would run around me faking and darting past so he could swipe it.  He fucking hates it.  I think he's afraid of it but he is a very brave cat.

When my dog was still around he'd retreat to the far corner of the room, put his face into that corner, tuck tail and start shivering.  I swear that vacuum really shook him up.    We eventually just put him outside whenever somebody was vacuuming.

He also used to have panic attacks when he was getting a bath.  Mind you he LOVED being clean after the bath.  He'd runn all over and lay outside sunning himself, but during the bath he'd start hyperventaliating.  Just dang weird.

I can't stand the sound of a Hoover, but any other brand is fine. I also find MRI's soothing and relaxing..

My dog runs to the doorbell like a Marine to gunfire.

He runs from the sound of the vacuum like a Frenchman from a fight.

Having to hear a vacuum for long drives me batty. It is simply the most irritating noise in the world to me. Of course some vacuums are far worse than others.

+1 lol...mine even hates the sound of the shop vac being rolled out to suck up water from my leaky basement.  I have one of those stainless steel shop vacs, and it sounds like a drum as it rolls accross the concrete floor.  The Finnster goes into immediate "vacate the area" mode when he hears the telltale sound.

I hate that sound.  I always try to vacuum as quickly as possible.  Can't stand to hear it close to me if someone else is using it.

ok, i have two labs.  gunfire, thunder, big stereo sounds of Santana, vacuum cleaner (which is run often after 2x lab furparties in the house on saturday nights) whatever, don't seem to bother 'em.  amazing.

only dogs i've ever had that are un-responsive to big noise.  they love it.  will play and bark at the vacuum (rainbow waterfilter job) if i let 'em in the house when i'm running same.

last set of dogs (15 years ago) hated it and would freak bigtime if i fire her up, or touched off a round, or a thunderboomer came through.

I have a central vac system so it's actually pretty quiet.  The pug stands a ways back and cocks his head at it but the bigger dog runs like hell from it.
