I don't have any idea about the differences, benefits, disadvantages of each...

Choose .308.

Thank you. Drive through.

I know this has to be a joke.

308 and 7.62 are what John Kerry had incoming during vietnam.  7.62 is what all other grunts had incoming.

What in the heck do you want it to do?

Plink?
Long range target?
Deer?
SHTF?

What are you going to use it for?

Two entirely different rounds. One is Soviet in origin, one is...not.

The 7.62x39 has the roughly same ballistics and effect as a .30-30, so it's fine for hunting. .308 is also a fine hunting round.

For cheap, underpowered, plinking ammo get the 7.62x39. For a full powered combat/hunting round go with the .308 (7.62x51).

Get the .308, it is by far more powerful.
Maximum velocities with a 150 grain bullet in each are about:
  .308  - 2900 fps at 58,000 CUP
7.62x39mm  - 2100 fps at 45,000 CUP

fps - feet per second
CUP - copper units of pressure

Just my $.02

Depends on what you want to do with them.

If you want to do plinking or casual target shooting with cheap weapons, then, 7.62x39 is probably the way to go.
If you want to do serious target shooting or sniping with pricey, high-quality weapons, then you probably want 7.62x51 aka .308win.

Just a side question but is there a difference between 7.62x51 and .308?  There is definitely a difference between .223 and 5.56 according to ammo-oracle.

Quoted:
7.62 x 39, aka the russian m43 (1943) is a medium power round designed specifically for semi-automatic/selective fire assault weapons. it is effective in the sub-300 meter zone in the siminov sks45, kalashnikov ak47 and akm, but also used as a suppressive fire round out to 800m in the kalashnikov rpk and degtyarev rpd.

7.62 x 51 (.308 nato) is nearly a full power rifle round designed to be used in what are commonly referred to as 'battle rifles'. these would be semi-automatic and selective fire rifles such as the ar10, fn-fal, h&k g3/91, cetme. it is also used in light/g.p. machineguns of various description. it carries more energy to longer distances than the m43 round. in sniping applications it is useful to approximately 800 meters.

both rounds are fine for the purposes for which they were created.

m43 is dirt cheap, about $75 to $80 per 1000 rounds in my area. the firearms that use that round range from the $150 siminov to the $350 kalashnikov to the $2000 rpd.

.308 nato is more costly to shoot, althought the $350 cetmes and cheap fal/g3 clones from century can be great blasting fun. rifles get exponentially more pricey, though, as one goes up the quality ladder, with dsa built fal clones bring $1000 and up...way up.

as the old ar15.com saying goes...GET BOTH!

I ain't gonna tell you nuttin til you tell me where to get those pix!!
awww damn, my two cents;
.308
more accurate
more powerful
more recoil
far more versatile

7.62x39
cheaper
lighter rifles
not very versatile
not very accurate
little recoil

I would go with the .308 simply due to the overall versatility. It can do so much that a 7.62x39 can't.

Sorry folks... I've been away from the computer.  No this post was not a joke.  I really don't understand ammo all that well.  Heck, I don't even understand the difference between .223 and that other 5.45xwhatever round for the AR type rifles.  Don't laugh at me... If you care to explain those too, that'd be great.

I should have clarified earlier...

The reason I was asking was because I'm thinking of getting a VEPR and those were the choices.  I didn't want to get another .223 because I already have an AR.  I didn't realize that there was such a difference. between the two rounds (39mm v 51mm).

7.62x39

.308 = 7.62x51 (I didn't know that)

OK... that being said... I see that the .308 is a larger round.  I don't hunt, but I'd like a POWERFULL SHTF or just for shear destructive power.  Does that help you guys understand now?

That one will do it.
I didn't read Blackhawk Down because it would piss me off too much and Iwould go out and kill everyone that looked even slightly like a "Sammy", but there is apparently a paragraph in it that describes soldiers or Delta Force guys on a roof shooting the Sammies as they ran across an alley.  The ones hit the .223 kept running, but the ones hit with the .308 dropped like sacks of flour.

That clears it up a little.  7.62x 39 is roughly the same in power, range, recoil, expense as the .223

The .308 is a completely different animal.  It is a full power battle rifle round.

Since you already have the .223, get the .308 so you have a full power rifle with all the range, power, penetration, recoil and noise that that implies.  You should only consider the 7.62x39 if you are going to shoot ALOT.

You can buy Wolf 7.62x39 for $100/1000 anyday, while quality .308 is between $150 to $200/1000.

There is Indian .308 available for only $100/1000, but some people say it is inaccurate, and possibly dangerous.  Personally I have had good luck with it so far.

You can "Get Both"  inexpensively.  About $300 each.  Use your Pres Bush tax breaks.  Hope it helps!
