Better question would be "Is there a reason NOT to have a 1911?"

And the answer is no.

9mm is fine...for girls and emergencies like when you cant find a knife or a stick.
1911 .45 auto. Accept no substitutes.

ETA: Any gun is better than no gun. I have a Berreta .22 for when I just cant carry a bigger gun.

I went many years without a 1911.  I never saw the attraction.

That all changed last year when switched guns and I used my friend's Les Baer for IDPA.  I grew very fond of the 1911.

I picked up a Kimber TLE II a few weeks ago and took a pistol class with it last week.  I am a convert and know I will need another 1911.

My 1st pistol was a Glock.

Never saw the need for a 1911, but finally decided everyone should own one, it's a classic.

Bought my 1st, I'm now on my 4th.....and the Glock is getting sold.

It feels like an extension of your hand.

It's slide under recoil feels like warm butter moving back and forward.

It's one of the oldest sidearms still in constant use, and even "improvements" on it's design fail where the original does not.

What's not to like?

I just bought a 1911 three weeks ago. S.A.M. model made in the Philipines. Just didnt have the money right now for a Colt or SW Model 1911. I really like the pistol however. It is plenty accurate enough for me and all parts or supposed to interchange with the original Colt model.

The 1911 hasn't felt 'right' in my hand when I shot them before.
I have a spare fingergroove Hogue grip that might make it better...I'd need to buy a .45ACP 1911 for it though.

What brand/model would be good for a 1st 1911?
I've heard Colt is best...

I have owned many 1911's. I personally don’t care for em. It’s an archaic piece of weaponry but no collection is complete without one. The die hard 1911 guys were that same shit talking wannabe vets at our gun range that drank up all our coffee and never bought anything or shot on the range. They just sat around talking crap about whatever subject they read in a magazine somewhere. Not saying the guys here are the same type. Just an observation I had whiule working in a gun shop/range for years.

Now don’t get me wrong. The 1911 can be a very sexy toy. But my favorite thing I ever saw was a bowling pin shoot at out range. These guys had $2500 1911's decked out for pins. Well not all of them were worth that much but some serious work was involved. Anyway my range officer grabbed the beat up POS (only cause it’s mistreated)rental  Beretta Mod84 .380 and cleaned up the pins no problem with ouse reloads. He would turn around and say "It aint the bow it aint the arrow; it’s the Indian" and then start the competition. Same guy kicked major ass doing IPSC with a stock Browning Hi Power with a POS Uncle Mikes holster and 2 mags in his back pocket. People’s bowels loosed when they saw this guy shoot. What does that have to do with 1911's? umm nothing . Sorry.

Anyways I have a Frankenstein 1911. It’s seen some action overseas I am sure of it. Great guns but not that great IMHO. I love my CZ75 though.

There is a reason that SpecOps guys still use 1911's when they could use any plastic Hi-cap they want to.

I have 12 pistols and the only .45's I have are a Glock 21 and a USP Tactical.
I had the option to buy a 1911, but I bought another Sig P226 instead.

Damn, that is one FINE pistol

Very customizable if you like

Good caliber, can be a very good carry or self defense gun

It is not my first choice for an everyday carry gun but I love mine.  They are just the coolest looking gun made and you can tinker with them endlessly.  There is probably no gun out there with more modifications and parts and types of ammunition to try out.   You gotta own at least one.

It's one of the basics, every gun owner should have a 1911, and an AR-15.  I mean hell if you have only ONE pistol, make it a 1911. I finally got myself one last year and love it, Colt 1991A1.

I had a Springfield 1911 A1 in stainless. It was a reasonably accurate, well functioning pistol. No failures in around 1500 rounds that I shot it. That said, I liked it so much, that I gave it to my friend Jim for free. He doesn't have any guns, I decided that was the most expendable in my collection. I have no plans of buying another. I tried to convince myself it was a matter of capacity, but then I noticed my P7 is still in the safe....

The good news is, my buddy thinks it's the coolest thing since sliced bread. I still shoot circles around him with a $200 Hungarian FEG 9mm.

I like the look of the 1911.  I like its history.  I like its customizability.

It is truly a beautiful, and good design (IMHO) means that the object works well AND looks good.

But I like how my Glocks feel felt before I lost them in the lake, and I shoot better (more accurately and faster) with them.  (I'm one of those rare folks who like Glocks but hold no bad opinions of 1911s.  For me, it's a matter of ergonomic preference.)

If someone can explain to me why I'm comfortable with a Glock 30 but not with a 1911, I'd like to hear it.  If someone can tell me how to make a 1911 more comfortable to shoot, I'd like to hear that too.  I ask these questions expecting some good answers, not as rhetorical questions.

A perfect analogy. Like the black dress, you'll end up owning more than one. The Government 1911 is the classic American gun icon. And there are soooo many variations, parts & gunsmiths it - like the AR15 - will spawn its own gun fetish. I own 7 1911s.

More probably to do with the fact that Rob Leatham teaches them to shoot it fast and accurately.

Old technology. Anything the 1911 can do, a new design can do better.
